Feature: Going Platinum: I Missed a Bunch of Trophies in The Messenger, But Playing It Again Was a Pleasure

I was struggling to describe my thoughts on The Messenger, so I looked at my game trophies and realized I’d actually completed it multiple times.

I don’t often replay games anymore. When I was younger, I used to play the same games repeatedly, but it was usually because I didn’t have many options. Now, with so many games readily available, it’s hard to find a good reason to go back to something I’ve already finished.

I do like revisiting things I already love, when I have the chance. It’s amazing how you can discover new things and appreciate them even more the second time around, often noticing details you didn’t catch before.

I first played The Messenger when I reviewed it in 2019, but I wasn’t focused on earning all the Trophies at the time, so I missed quite a few.

After more than a year, I started a new game from the beginning to collect any Trophies I had missed and finish up any remaining tasks.

The game isn’t incredibly long, but it’s longer than most side-scrolling action platformers. Spending that much time on it felt like a big commitment, especially considering the rewards were just a few digital collectibles.

It was worth the effort, though, because The Messenger is such a joy to play.

The game is incredibly responsive and fun to play, with a charming personality. It’s full of clever jokes and self-aware moments, and the writing is consistently humorous.

The Messenger is full of charm, has some truly memorable scenes, and looks fantastic. While many recent games take inspiration from NES classics, this one is easily among the best.

I wouldn’t mind playing it again.

Cheers, The Messenger.
