The rumors were right! Sony has officially announced its next State of Play presentation, which will happen as usual in late September.
After seeing around 35 minutes of gameplay footage from both the company itself and other developers, we’re curious to know what else the presentation has in store. That means it’s time for some new predictions!
We’re going to discuss some things we expect to be highlighted in the upcoming State of Play presentation. In a little over 24 hours, we’ll see if our predictions are accurate or completely off base.
Before we stare into our crystal ball, though, let’s go over what we know will be there.
Saros Reveals Itself
Housemarque, the studio known for the hit game Returnal, recently revealed gameplay for their next project, Saros. They first announced the game earlier this year at a State of Play event, and now fans can finally see it in action.
Sony announced that they will soon be sharing a longer gameplay demo of the upcoming roguelike action game. They’ve promised almost five minutes of footage captured on the PlayStation 5.
Besides Saros, we don’t have official confirmation on any other games that will be featured in this State of Play, so let’s start guessing what else might appear.
Absolutely Marvel-ous
Sony and Marvel Games have a strong partnership, built on the success of the Spider-Man games made by Insomniac Games. They plan to continue this collaboration with two new games based on popular comic book superheroes.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a 4v4 fighting game made by Arc System Works, is highly anticipated. We think the recent State of Play presentation is a good place where they might reveal new characters and fighting arenas. Currently, eight characters – Captain America, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, Storm, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Ms. Marvel, and Starlord – have been announced, along with one stage: Marvel’s New York. Fans are hoping to see some additions to the roster and more stages soon.
Wolverine is almost guaranteed to be a playable character, and he’ll likely be a major focus in the game.
We believe the character might be identified as Tokon, and if that happens, it could be followed by a new trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine – a game first revealed in 2021. We think this would be a perfect and logical sequence of events.
Marathon Is Still Running
Bungie’s new game, Marathon, has faced some delays after players provided critical feedback during early testing.
We expect to see more news about the sci-fi first-person shooter before the end of April 2026. It’s likely a beta test could happen soon.
It seems the team won’t be showing anything at this State of Play event, and won’t likely share an update until November. Therefore, don’t anticipate seeing this game featured in the presentation.
Stellar Blade Gets Spooky
Fans are expecting news about the popular action game Stellar Blade soon, and with Sony publishing the game, it’s likely we’ll hear more during this week’s State of Play presentation.
Many believe this will be a horror-themed add-on, and some think it could coincide with the launch of Silent Hill F, perhaps even featuring a crossover. If that’s true, Sony’s upcoming presentation seems like the most likely place we’ll see an announcement.
Resident Evil Requiem Reintroduces Leon S. Kennedy
Sony and Capcom frequently team up for reveals during Sony’s State of Play events. With rumors suggesting Leon Kennedy will appear in the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem, we think an announcement could happen during the next presentation.
I’m really hoping Capcom lets me play as Leon! I’m not sure if he’ll be a main character or just show up as part of the story, but honestly, so many of us longtime fans would be ecstatic to control him, even if it’s just for a couple of missions. Capcom *has* to know that!
The game will primarily follow the story of a new character, Grace Ashcroft, but we think it would be amazing to see some returning characters like Leon make an appearance.
Phantom Blade Zero Carves Out a Release Date
We’re really excited about Phantom Blade Zero – it looks fantastic! The team at Push Square has been eagerly awaiting news on when the complete game will be released.
The game, which is only available on PlayStation 5, is expected to have a release date announced by the end of 2025, according to its developer, S-GAME. Many fans are hoping this recent PlayStation State of Play event will be where that announcement is made – perhaps with a new trailer, release date, and details on how to pre-order.
PS Plus Shows Members What’s Next
State of Play presentations give Sony a great opportunity to talk about PlayStation Plus, their subscription service. PS Plus lets players access online multiplayer, offers free monthly games, and includes even more benefits depending on the chosen plan.
We anticipate an announcement about PlayStation Plus during the event, likely revealing the games that will be added in October. Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a strong possibility, as its list of PlayStation trophies recently appeared online.
The update will likely include more announcements. Sony often reveals indie games launching immediately on PS Plus Extra, so we might see something like that – perhaps *Little Devil Inside*? It’s certainly something to hope for.
Giving God of War the Side-Eye
We’re approaching this news with some caution. There’s a rumor circulating that a new God of War game is being developed, potentially revisiting the original Greek setting. It’s said to be a side-scrolling action platformer in the style of Metroidvania games.
We think this sounds fantastic and would be thrilled to see it happen. Since the next big God of War game is likely still a ways off, this would be a perfect, smaller experience to keep fans engaged in the meantime.
It might be featured, but we’re not very sure. Sony usually focuses on announcing just a few games at a time, so it’s unlikely to be a major part of the presentation.
Wishful Thinking
Let’s end with a few wildly optimistic predictions. They probably won’t happen, but we’ll be sure to celebrate in our team chat if they do!
- Anything Bloodborne. Got to mention it, at least.
- Dragon Quest 12. It’s been ages, guys.
- Final Fantasy 9 Remake. Come on, make Robert’s day.
- MotorStorm. It deserves a comeback!
- WipEout. Every PlayStation has had a new WipEout game of some description; don’t break the combo, Sony.
- Shenmue 4. Sammy was joking, but it’s going in.
- SEGA’s retro revivals — Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and so on. Give the fans what they want!
- SUPERHOT PSVR2 port. This one’s for Aaron.
Okay, my predictions are done! Now we just have to wait and see how right (or totally wrong!) I was when the State of Play finally happens. Seriously, I’m hyped! What are *you* hoping they show off during the presentation? Let me know in the comments!
