The latest Final Fantasy XIV expansion was revealed at Fan Fest 2026 in Anaheim, California this weekend.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting this sixth expansion of the game, especially since Dawntrail – the last one, released almost two years ago – proved to be both popular and divisive.
Before Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) began his opening speech at the event, a short trailer gave viewers their first cinematic glimpse of the upcoming expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold.

In addition to the major announcement, it was confirmed that Evercold is scheduled to release in January 2027.
Update 7.5 will add new story quests designed to get players ready for the upcoming expansion.
While fans have been waiting for almost two years, a nine-month delay might seem long, the game’s developers actually consider it a surprisingly short amount of time, as jokingly noted by Yoshi-P.
He jokingly gave his approval, saying, “Go ahead and get excited about it.”

Final Fantasy XIV is still a very popular online game, but the latest major update has received a mixed reaction. Many players have expressed disappointment with the new story and content.
Naoki Yoshida, known as Yoshi-P, has dedicated over ten years to developing Final Fantasy XIV and doesn’t intend to retire from the project, as he told us in an interview last year.
The recent Evercold update clearly shows that the Final Fantasy XIV team, led by Yoshi-P, is still actively developing the game. Players are now hoping that patch 8.0 will bring the MMORPG back to its best, reminding everyone why it’s considered one of the best available today.
