Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Will Require Over 90 GB of Storage on Nintendo Switch 2

Square Enix recently updated the storage requirements for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. They initially stated the game would need 87.9 GB of space, but now confirm it will actually require between 90 and 95 GB for the standard edition.

The amount of storage space needed depends on which version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade you get. Both the Limited Early Purchase Edition and the Limited Early Purchase Digital Deluxe Edition will require between 93.8 and 99 GB of space.

Okay, so I just heard something crazy about the Switch 2. Apparently, even before Square Enix increased the storage needed, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade was already going to be the biggest game on the system! We’re talking way bigger than WWE 2K25, which is currently at 73.2 GB. Seriously, this game is a beast!

Even with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2’s storage capacity, Square Enix has announced that the physical version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade – launching January 22, 2026 – will be distributed using Game-Key Cards. This is mainly because the Switch 2’s game cartridges are limited to around 64 GB and are costly to produce. Additionally, physical cartridges can be slower than the console’s built-in storage, which also influences this decision.

Naoki Hamaguchi, a game director, recently discussed the increasing use of Game-Key Cards – which don’t include the full game data like traditional cartridges – and believes this shift is unavoidable. He previously stated in October that physical game copies are becoming increasingly rare within the industry, seeing it as a larger trend that’s difficult to stop.

I get why a lot of fans, especially those who love physical games and care about preserving older titles, aren’t thrilled with Game-Key Cards. Mr. Hamaguchi understands it too! He pointed out that it’s especially true for Nintendo fans, since we really tend to prefer owning physical copies of our games.

Hamaguchi noted a general shift towards digital game distribution. While acknowledging some players may resist this change, he believes it could allow developers to release more games on the next Nintendo Switch console.

Square Enix announced that after releasing Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S in January, they plan to bring the remaining games in the trilogy to additional platforms. The second game is currently available on PC and PlayStation 5, and the third is still being developed.
