Following the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the concluding chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series, director Naoki Hamaguchi recently shared several new details in an interview with Famitsu (translated by DeepL). Fans are particularly curious about the airship Highwind – how much will it be featured in the game? And what led the development team to add a parachute mechanic?
The Highwind is incredibly large, and attempting to land it like in the first game creates issues. It either appears far too big for the environment or can only touch down on perfectly level ground. This challenge arose early in development, prompting the team to explore different ways to help players truly feel the game’s vastness.
Most people are now used to starting games – especially battle royale titles – by parachuting down into the world. We wanted to make our game feel instantly familiar and easy to pick up, so we decided to use a parachute descent right from the beginning of development. I explained this to the team, and we’ve stuck with that approach ever since.
Getting back to the Highwind is easy – just use fast travel. Once you’re at a location, you can choose how to get around: ride a Chocobo, walk, or jump down from the airship. You don’t have to use the airship every time, though.
Hamaguchi explained that exploring the game world is like traveling across continents. If you’ve already visited a place – like Kalm or Cosmo Canyon – you can quickly travel there. But if it’s new to you, you’ll need to parachute down first. The game is designed so you can parachute near unexplored areas and then discover them on foot. While the game focuses on making exploration easy, players can still choose to parachute if they prefer.
Players will have access to the Highwind airship very early in the game and can start traveling with it right away. The whole world, including Midgar, is open for exploration, although some locations, like the Northern Crater, are initially inaccessible. The Highwind itself has been carefully rebuilt and will evolve as you progress, gaining new decorations and even offering new side quests from the crew. Think of it as a central hub where you can relax and unwind after completing important missions.
Hamaguchi isn’t revealing where Revelation starts just yet, but promises it will feel similar to the beginning of the third game. He jokingly added that if you fly off the edge of the game world, you’ll loop right back around, just like in reality.
The highly anticipated game, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, is scheduled to release in Spring 2027. It will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and the new Nintendo Switch 2 all at the same time.
