As a huge Nintendo fan, I was so excited to hear rumors about a remake of Ocarina of Time possibly dropping this year, along with a new Star Fox game that sounds like it’ll be a throwback to the older titles. Apparently, a new 3D Mario is planned for 2027, which feels like a long wait, but still awesome! I was also really hoping for news on the Final Fantasy 9 Remake, but according to insider NateTheHate, there haven’t been any updates on that project recently – it sounds like it’s stalled out for now, which is a bummer.
He recently shared on a podcast with ModernVintageGamer that the game is currently paused, but not canceled. According to him, when Square Enix puts a project ‘on ice,’ it means they might revisit it in the future. However, he hasn’t heard of any recent progress, and hopes Square Enix will eventually return to the project and potentially release a remake of Final Fantasy 9.
Talk of a remake started in 2023, first reported by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg and Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb. This happened around the same time as the release of Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster (later known as Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles), which was very well-received by critics and sold a million copies. However, an official announcement for Final Fantasy 9 Remake is still forthcoming.
It’s unclear if a remake will be as large in scope as Final Fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth, but there’s definitely a lot of excitement among fans. Final Fantasy 9, released in 2000 for the original PlayStation, remains a favorite due to its memorable characters, compelling story, and classic Final Fantasy style. As of 2025, it had sold nearly 9 million copies.
So, the character designer, Toshiyuki Itahana, left Square Enix a while back, and honestly, it’s got me wondering where this game is headed now. It’s a bit up in the air, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled for any news or updates – hopefully, we’ll find out more soon!
