Even though Fire Country is halfway through its fourth season, the death of Vince is still deeply felt by viewers. Billy Burke’s departure and his character’s tragic ending were the most significant changes to the popular CBS show so far. Diane Farr, who plays his wife Sharon, recently shared details about how Burke announced his exit to the cast.
After the season finale of Fire Country, fans were left wondering about the future of several characters. Reports surfaced that Stephanie Arcila and Burke would be leaving the show, and the cliffhanger ending fueled speculation. Many assumed Vince wouldn’t survive, but that wasn’t officially confirmed – not even to the cast until they began their summer break, as Diane Farr shared with Us Weekly.
I learned about it over the summer. At the time, none of us understood what was going on. Billy, Jeff Fahey, and I entered the burning building without knowing any more details.
The season ended with a shocking cliffhanger, leaving viewers and the actors themselves wondering who would survive the fire. Unfortunately, the story didn’t have a positive resolution, meaning the cast also had to learn the heartbreaking fate of their characters.
Interestingly, it was Burke who told the cast the news. Farr explained that when the actor who played Vince found out he wouldn’t be back for Season 4, he shared a note with everyone, and that’s how they all learned about it.
It was obvious the show was heading for a change, and Billy was the one who let us know. He sent a message to the cast explaining he wouldn’t be returning, which was really upsetting. It felt like I could only play half of my character since our roles were so connected.
This is a deeply sad loss, particularly for Sharon, which explains why Farr was so upset. She also expressed a desire for her character to mourn Vince’s passing for an extended period.
As a big fan of Fire Country, I really noticed how stable the main cast was for the first three seasons. We got so used to seeing Bode, Sharon, Vince, Gabriela, Manny, Eve, and Jake together, and it was comforting. But this season was different – there were some real changes, and honestly, it felt a little tough to watch. I was glad it was Burke who got to deliver the news, though. It seemed like a meaningful moment for everyone involved, and I think it meant a lot to the actors as well.
Following the news about her co-star’s exit from Fire Country, Stephanie Arcila expressed hope that Max Thieriot (and Alan Tudyk) might return to the show. While it would be relatively simple to write Gabriela’s character back into the storyline after her departure at the start of Season 4, bringing back the actor who played Vince will be more challenging. Still, Arcila has some thoughts on how it could happen.
I believe we’ll always include the original cast of seven. Ideally, I’d like to explore a more grown-up storyline for Gabriela and Bode in the future. It would also be great to see Sharon begin having dreams about Vince. That’s the chance we take when we allow such talented actors to pursue other opportunities – they might not be available to return later.

I really hope things work out for everyone, but right now, the characters are still struggling with Vince’s death and facing the aftermath, including everything surrounding that mysterious note.
Behind the scenes, Farr also shared her continued concern about characters potentially leaving the show. She explained this stems from the inherent danger of being a firefighter, a point powerfully highlighted by the recent loss of Vince.
