Fire Force Animator Apologizes After a Major Blunder: “I Feel So Much Guilt”

After a four-year wait following its second season, Fire Force returned in Spring 2025 with a third season, planned to conclude the story in two parts. The second part premiered in Winter 2026 and is finally revealing the secrets of the series’ world. Based on the manga by Atsushi Ookubo, Fire Force is known for its creative post-apocalyptic setting, exciting action, engaging story, and especially its well-received ending – considered one of the best in the Shonen genre. The series follows Shinra Kusakabe and Special Fire Force Company 8 as they investigate the cause of spontaneous human combustion, a terrifying phenomenon affecting people everywhere.

Season 3 is covering a lot of ground – 130 chapters of the original manga will be adapted into only 25 episodes, making for a quick pace. Fortunately, the animation quality in this season is excellent, and the studio is doing a great job with the adaptation. Episode 5 of Part 2 received a lot of positive feedback, especially for its impressive animation. A scene featuring the character Maki was particularly praised for its expressive character work. However, the animator who worked on that scene, Dorian Coulan, had to apologize to fans for an error.

Fire Force Animator Apologizes for Turning In Incomplete Work

Following a popular fan account’s praise of a scene featuring Maki on X, animator Coulan responded with a sincere apology. He explained that he was severely rushed and deeply regrets the trouble he caused the production team. He feels especially guilty towards voice actress Inoue-san and is hesitant to share the remaining footage, believing it doesn’t meet professional standards due to the time constraints.

He added, “You don’t need to thank me. The real credit goes to the incredibly talented key animator, second-generation animator, and the animation cleanup artist. If the final product looks good, it’s all thanks to their hard work, not mine.”

Coulan apologized and shared a short, five-second clip of his initial work, which was a rough, unfinished sketch. He also made sure to credit the animators who finished the scene and made it look so good in the recent episode.

Dorian Coulan Is a Renowned One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen Animator

Coulan is a highly respected animator who became well-known in 2022 and 2023 for his work on popular episodes of One Piece, including Episode 1044 featuring Nico Robin’s dramatic transformation.

He previously contributed to the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen, notably animating some of its most popular episodes. He was a key animator for five episodes, including the one focusing on Nanami Kento (Episode 12) and Thunderclap Part 2, which continued the intense fight between Sukuna and Mahoraga. He also animated Episode 24 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

The latest episode of Fire Force featured Coulan joining the team, and fans really enjoyed it! Despite feeling like he didn’t contribute enough and calling himself unprofessional, Coulan actually provided the initial outline for Maki’s character design. The resulting scene was a highlight, made possible by the collaborative work of everyone involved.
