First Greenland 2: Migration Poster Braces for Impact [Exclusive]

The 2020 film Greenland stood out in the disaster movie genre for its realistic approach to a world-ending event. Starring Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin, the movie follows a family’s struggle to survive as a massive comet threatens to destroy Earth. Despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was a surprise hit, largely because it focused on the characters’ emotional journey alongside the action. Its success led to plans for a sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, which has been in the works since 2021. The sequel promises to expand on the story of the Garrity family and show a broader view of the post-apocalyptic world they now inhabit.

As a big fan of the first Greenland, I’m really excited about the sequel! ComicBook just dropped a new poster for Greenland 2: Migration, and it looks intense. It shows the Garrity family – John, Allison, and their son Nathan, now played by Roman Griffin Davis – staring out at a sky full of meteors. It really sets the stage for another terrifying adventure, making it clear they’re far from safe. It’s great to see the family back together, even if it’s under these incredibly stressful circumstances!

Five years after the events of the first film, Greenland 2: Migration follows the family as they are forced to leave their secure bunker in Greenland. They begin a dangerous journey across the frozen ruins of Europe, searching for a new place to live.

Greenland 2: Migration Can Make Up For the First Movie’s Troubled Distribution

The journey of the film Greenland to audiences was nearly as turbulent as the disaster it portrays. Originally intended for a wide release in theaters by STXfilms, the 2020 premiere was disrupted by the pandemic and theater shutdowns. This led the studio to change plans, resulting in a complex rollout where the film skipped most U.S. cinemas. Instead, it became available for rental on demand before streaming on HBO Max as part of a significant agreement. While Greenland earned over $52 million internationally where theaters were open, it didn’t reach its full potential in the U.S.

Lionsgate, the distributor for Greenland 2: Migration, clearly believes in the film’s potential, despite the first Greenland movie having a difficult theatrical release and limited box office success. They saw the value of the story and the strong connection audiences had with its characters. Critics appreciated the first film’s realistic portrayal of a family facing disaster, which made it stand out from other big-budget disaster movies. Now, with a larger budget and a commitment to a wide theatrical release, Lionsgate is giving the Greenland franchise the chance it deserved from the start. Greenland 2: Migration can finally showcase the world of Greenland to audiences worldwide in theaters, overcoming the challenges of the original film’s release.

Greenland 2: Migration is scheduled to be released in theaters on January 9, 2026.
