First look at Microsoft’s new auto light/dark mode switch for Windows 11 — coming soon to PowerToys

Windows 11 users will soon be able to automatically change between light and dark mode based on the time of day, thanks to an update to the PowerToys app. Microsoft recently shared a preview of how this feature will look and the settings you’ll be able to customize within the PowerToys settings.

As a tech fan, I’m really impressed with this new PowerToys feature – they’ve clearly put a lot of thought into it. It’s called “Light Switch,” and it’s super easy to use. The interface is clean and intuitive, letting you set specific times for Windows to automatically switch between light and dark mode. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference in my day-to-day experience!

Light Switch allows you to quickly toggle between light and dark mode using a keyboard shortcut. You can also automate this process by scheduling the theme to change with the sunrise and sunset, customized to your location. Need it a little earlier or later? You can adjust the timing by a few minutes.

As an analyst, I’ve been looking at this new feature, and it’s really about giving users fine-grained control over theming. Essentially, it lets you decide *which* parts of Windows actually change with light or dark mode. Windows currently separates themes into two categories: system elements, like the taskbar and window borders, and apps themselves. This means I can, for instance, set it to only switch the themes of my applications while keeping the overall Windows system theme consistently dark – a nice touch for those who prefer a specific look for certain parts of the interface.

As a fan, I have to say this feature is incredibly well done! It’s packed with everything you could want for automatically switching between light and dark mode, and the level of customization is amazing. Honestly, I can’t believe Microsoft hasn’t included something like this in Windows itself, but I’m so glad the PowerToys team took the initiative and built it. It really fills a missing piece!

It would be great if Windows added a built-in light and dark mode switch, like most other operating systems offer. While other platforms have this feature, PowerToys’ Light Switch offers more customization options. Currently, Light Switch isn’t included in the newest official version of PowerToys, but it’s expected to be available soon.
