Despite receiving very negative reviews – only 15% positive on Rotten Tomatoes – Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was a big hit with audiences this weekend, earning $64 million in the US and Canada. This was despite strong competition from the second weekend of Zootopia 2 and the third weekend of Wicked: For Good. Adding in $46.5 million from international theaters, the movie has already made over $110 million worldwide. While its opening weekend wasn’t as huge as the first film’s $80 million, it’s more than enough to ensure another sequel will likely be made.
As a big movie fan, I’ve been watching the numbers for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and it’s been interesting! The first film had a quick drop-off after its opening weekend, complicated by its release on Peacock. This sequel seems to be holding much better, so it’ll be worth seeing if that continues. What’s really striking, though, is that after just three days, it’s already made more money than all four of the Stephen King adaptations that came out this year – and those movies got much better reviews! Let’s dive into the details and see exactly what’s going on with the box office.
How Did the Four Stephen King Movies Do in 2025?

February saw the release of Osgood Perkins’ film, The Monkey, which performed reasonably well. It earned $68.9 million globally – $39.7 million of that in the US – from a budget of only $11 million, and currently holds a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck was a big hit with audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, but it didn’t perform well when released in over 1,000 theaters this June. While the film’s budget hasn’t been revealed, it was likely significant for an independent movie, considering the well-known cast and complex story. It only earned $19 million worldwide ($6 million in the U.S.), but it has the potential to become a beloved cult classic, meaning it might still gain a following and recoup costs over time.
This year saw two Stephen King novels, written under his Richard Bachman pseudonym, brought to the screen. One was a remake, and the other was The Long Walk, which many believed was impossible to adapt for film. However, Francis Lawrence, director of The Hunger Games, successfully made it happen, and the result is surprisingly good. Though not a massive box office hit, the film performed well, earning an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $63.1 million on a $20 million budget.
Edgar Wright’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man (originally written as ‘Bachman’) hasn’t performed well in theaters, despite staying true to the source material, moving at a quick pace, and featuring a strong performance from Glen Powell. It’s the biggest box office disappointment of the four King movies released in 2025. Considering its $110 million production cost, the film needed to earn at least $220 million worldwide just to cover its expenses.
After four weeks in cinemas, the film has earned a disappointing $1.2 million, and has been removed from another 1,200 screens. Its total domestic earnings are only $36.6 million, with overseas markets adding a meager $29.2 million. While digital rentals might boost its popularity in the coming weeks, it’s unlikely to become profitable. Ultimately, this film is performing worse than another 2025 film directed by King, which had a better opening weekend despite receiving a low 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
