The latest Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is already a hit with audiences. Despite what critics are saying, the film earned a strong box office total its opening weekend, showing that fans are excited about the sequel.
The new horror movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, based on the popular video game, easily topped the box office its first weekend. Starring Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Matthew Lillard, Mckenna Grace, and Piper Rubio, the film earned $63 million in the U.S. and Canada after opening on December 5th. Another film took second place this weekend and has now made over $900 million globally.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 performed better at the U.S. box office than expected. While predictions estimated an opening weekend of $35 to $40 million, the movie actually earned $63 million. However, this is lower than the original Five Nights at Freddy’s film, which made $80 million domestically in its opening weekend and close to $300 million worldwide.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the new horror sequel topped the box office charts on its opening weekend. Over 2,500 fans have shared their opinions on Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, giving it an impressive 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The reviewer stated the movie successfully improves upon the first one, which is rare for video game adaptations – only franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario have consistently achieved that level of success.
Could there be a Third Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie?
Emma Tammi and Scott Cawthon, who also created the first Five Nights at Freddy’s film, directed Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Josh Hutcherson and Nicholas Lillard reprise their roles, and Lillard hopes a potential third movie will feature a major confrontation between his character, William Afton, and Hutcherson’s Mike Schmidt, even though Afton has limited screen time in the sequel.
I’m a big fan, and I was excited to hear about Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, but apparently, don’t expect to see a ton of my character, William Afton, in this one! The director, Scott Lillard, explained that sometimes villains like Voldemort in Harry Potter or Darth Vader in Star Wars don’t really become major players until later in the story, and that seems to be the case here. Honestly, while I don’t have a massive role this time, what I do get to do is amazing, and I’m really proud of it. We’re all hoping this movie does well enough that we can make a trilogy – that’s always been the goal! Everything really hinges on how the film performs in theaters, so please go see it if you’re excited too!
What I’m really excited about is the potential for an epic showdown, like the final battle between Harry and Voldemort or Luke and Darth Vader – and we might just get that in Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. That’s the dream, honestly. We’ll build from there and dig deeper into the story, but first, we need to get audiences into the theaters to experience it all.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is now playing in movie theaters.
