Wonder Woman is a hugely popular and significant character for DC Comics. Since first appearing in All Star Comics #8, the Amazonian Princess has consistently represented truth and justice. Recently, writer Tom King took on the task of telling Wonder Woman’s story, and he’s a bit of a controversial figure. People tend to have strong opinions about his work – some praise his award-winning stories like Mister Miracle (2017) and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, while others were critical of his run on Batman (2016). His distinctive storytelling approach has proven divisive, particularly with his recent Wonder Woman series (2023).
Wonder Woman fans have been critical of the recent storylines, but there’s good news for those who haven’t been enjoying them. After the “Island of Mice and Men” arc finished, Stephanie Williams and Jeffrey Spokes joined the creative team for a two-part story called “The Village.” The first issue, released in Wonder Woman (2023) #29, appears to address almost all the major issues readers had with the previous direction of the series.
The Trouble With King

Tom King’s run on Wonder Woman has sparked a lot of debate. He has a very unique writing style, and tends to be overly detailed when writing ongoing series. His initial story arc was incredibly long – nineteen issues! – which demonstrates his approach to storytelling. King prefers a slow build, repeating themes and lines to gradually lead to a key moment or conflict. While I generally like his work, it’s easy to see why some readers might find his pace frustratingly slow.
The main problem with the current Wonder Woman comic is how Wonder Woman herself is depicted. For the first nineteen issues, a male character narrated the story, and since then, the focus has largely been on Diana through the eyes of others—often men. This lack of her own inner voice, combined with a lot of repeated dialogue, makes her feel distant. Additionally, Diana has been working mostly alone, which disappoints many fans because sisterhood has always been a core part of her character and stories.
A Pause To Rest and Recover

In the latest story arc by Williams, the focus shifts to the missing sense of connection between the Amazons. Diana, feeling adrift, returns to Themyscira, and the other Amazons readily offer to care for her daughter, Lizzie, while she regains her footing. Throughout much of the previous storyline, even when Diana teamed up with allies, those relationships felt distant. This time, the Amazons actively and personally involve themselves, showcasing the strong bonds of sisterhood that define their culture. Despite the initial premise of the Amazons being displaced or facing hardship, they haven’t been prominently featured until now. This arc puts them center stage, demonstrating the very connection their society values.
This story emphasizes that Diana doesn’t need to handle everything by herself. The Amazons’ strength comes from their support of each other, not just individual power. Wonder Woman relearns this lesson and finally gets the time and space to grieve the losses she’s experienced. She’s allowed to heal while her sisters step up to care for Lizzie, beautifully illustrating their bond. This arc perfectly blends themes of motherhood and sisterhood, something that’s been missing from the series.
Despite a strong beginning, the story unfortunately doesn’t center around Diana’s perspective, a common issue throughout much of the writer’s work on Wonder Woman. While understandable for this particular story, fans hoping to hear Diana’s thoughts and voice won’t find it beyond the first few pages. Overall, though, it’s a genuinely heartwarming and enjoyable read with some well-placed suspense. I recommend it to all Wonder Woman fans, even if you haven’t been following this writer’s previous stories.
