Forget the Trinity, This Justice Leaguer Needs to Headline the Next Event

Okay, so DC’s latest event, DC K.O., is really delivering! The whole DC universe – heroes and villains – are throwing down to become the next King Omega and ultimately face off against Darkseid for everything. It’s a blast to read, especially if you’re familiar with these characters; it feels like a real celebration of DC history. This is the final installment of a three-part story, and it’s written by Scott Snyder, who you might know from the awesome Dark Knights: Metal and Dark Nights: Death Metal events. Those stories heavily featured Batman and Wonder Woman, but K.O.? This one is all about Superman, and it feels right at home with his legacy.

Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman – DC’s iconic Trinity – have long been the faces of heroism in the DC Universe. While they’re leading the charge now, the next major storyline should center around the Flash. Often considered the fourth pillar of DC, after the Trinity, the Flash has consistently proven himself during past crises and deserves the opportunity to take the lead and save the day in his own event.

The Unsung Hero in Countless Crises

Although the Flash hasn’t always been the central figure in DC’s biggest crises, he’s consistently proven himself to be a vital character throughout them. He was instrumental in introducing the concept of the multiverse with both Barry Allen and Jay Garrick, which made Barry a key target for the Anti-Monitor during Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Anti-Monitor aimed to destroy or capture anyone who could travel between universes, and the Flash was his top priority. Ultimately, it was Barry’s selfless sacrifice that saved the multiverse from destruction.

During the Infinite Crisis, the Flash and his allies, known as the Flash Family, played a crucial role in victory. They managed to temporarily contain the incredibly powerful Superboy-Prime within the Speed Force, saving numerous heroes. Later, in Final Crisis, the Flashes’ connection to the Speed Force protected them from Darkseid’s mind control. They ultimately defeated him by using their super speed to redirect his devastating Omega Beams back at him.

The storyline Dark Nights: Death Metal prominently included Wally West, who had gained some abilities from Doctor Manhattan after using the Mobius Chair. He was crucial in starting the entire event by restoring Wonder Woman’s memories, and he kept the Darkest Knight occupied while plans were made to collect Anti-Crisis Energy. While the Flashes haven’t always been the central heroes, they’ve been essential to the success of nearly every major event in DC Comics history.

The Fastest Crisis Alive

The Flash has proven he’s capable of leading a large-scale story, and we can expect an event centered around him to explore his connection to time and alternate realities. Currently, the main DC universe is isolated from other universes, but the possibility of alternate timelines still exists – as seen when Wally West briefly created duplicates of himself by tapping into this potential.

The Speed Force, which gives Flashes their powers, might be falling apart without a connection to other universes. The Flashes, as its foremost experts, would be best suited to fix it. Alternatively, a powerful being linked to the Speed Force could have been released when Earth was isolated, intending to use our world as a base to conquer others. It’s also possible this danger has nothing to do with the Speed Force at all, and is instead a threat emerging from time or space itself – one that only the Flash’s speed could counter.

Any story involving the Flash needs to connect to his legacy as one of DC’s earliest and most innovative heroes. The Flash has consistently expanded the boundaries of the DC Universe more than almost anyone, and considering his popularity – alongside the shared prominence of DC’s other top heroes – it’s time for the Fastest Man Alive to finally receive the focus he deserves.
