Exciting news might be on the horizon for Star Wars fans. Although Lucasfilm hasn’t confirmed anything, recent reports suggest that the Rogue Squadron project is changing direction and could be developed in a new way.
Rogue Squadron could now become a TV show
According to a new report from industry source MyTimeToShineHello, the planned Rogue Squadron movie is now being developed as a TV series. This news comes after a long period of uncertainty surrounding the project, which was originally announced in December 2020 as a film directed by Patty Jenkins (known for Wonder Woman) and produced by Lucasfilm.
In March 2024, Patty Jenkins revealed on the Talking Pictures Podcast that she was back working on the Star Wars film after stepping away from Wonder Woman 3. She explained that she’s currently writing a draft of the Star Wars script and acknowledged the challenges the filmmakers face. Jenkins also reaffirmed her dedication to Rogue Squadron, describing it as a story about fighter pilots and sharing that it’s inspired by her father’s time in the military.
Lucasfilm first postponed the movie in November 2021 due to scheduling issues, and then took it off their list of planned projects. After stepping away from directing Wonder Woman 3 in late 2022, Jenkins made a new agreement with Lucasfilm to continue working on the script.
Following recent announcements in April 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told IGN that the studio is still considering a ‘Rogue Squadron’ project. She confirmed they continue to discuss it, and while it might become a film, it could also be developed as a series.
Presenting the story in a connected, ongoing format could tie together the original Star Wars films, the sequel trilogy, and all the current Star Wars series.
If made, a new Rogue Squadron movie would add to the expanding list of Star Wars shows and films like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Acolyte. The movie is described as introducing a fresh group of starfighter pilots as they train and face dangerous missions in a fast-paced, exciting adventure.
