Now that a reboot of Cheers is in the works, a popular character from the 2023 Frasier revival could bridge the gap between the new show and the original starring Ted Danson. Cheers, created by Glen and Les Charles and James Burrows, is widely considered one of the greatest sitcoms ever. It premiered in 1982 and quickly became a TV landmark, centering on the lives of the staff and regulars at a Boston bar. The show was a huge hit for NBC, leading to spin-offs like Frasier starring Kelsey Grammer.
Even years after ending, both shows still have dedicated fans. Kelsey Grammer successfully brought back his character, the sophisticated psychiatrist, for a two-season revival on Paramount+. While fans continue to ask for a Cheers reboot, the original Boston bar hasn’t returned since Sam Malone served his last customers in 1993. Though new episodes of the original aren’t planned, a British remake is currently being developed by Simon Nye, who also wrote Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells. There’s no release date yet, but the idea of a British pub as the setting for a new comedy is already appealing.
Alan Cornwall Can Connect The Cheers Reboot With The Original

Details are scarce about the planned reboot of Cheers, which was first announced in 2024. At the time, the Frasier revival was already airing its second season, focusing on Frasier’s life back in Boston as he worked to reconnect with his son, Freddy. However, the Paramount+ show didn’t really explore Frasier’s history with the city or connections to Cheers. Instead, it introduced a lot of new characters, like Alan Cornwall—an old college friend of Frasier’s from Oxford who helped him get his job at Harvard.
The recent Frasier revival emphasized Alan’s British background and how it set him apart from Frasier’s usual Bostonian friends. Given his reconnection with his daughter during the reboot, he might now be more likely to return to the U.K. to be closer to her and his grandchild. However, his fondness for pubs could lead him to a new one that just happens to be the location for the upcoming Cheers reboot.
This new Cheers reboot isn’t bound by the original show’s history. The premise of Cheers was so broadly appealing that it can be successfully recreated in a new setting without even acknowledging the original series. However, it would be great to connect the upcoming UK version to the original, and bringing back the character of Alan is a clever way to do just that.
Will An Original Cheers Revival With Ted Danson & The Original Cast Ever Happen?

While it’s exciting to see the Cheers universe expand with Frasier, many fans still want to revisit the original Boston bar and its beloved characters. Over the years, the cast has reunited for special events celebrating the show, but they’ve never actually reprised their roles for a continuation or revival. Interestingly, even when Frasier returned to Boston, he didn’t stop by the pub, leaving fans wondering what happened to it. Though some sources suggest the bar is now closed within the show’s story, this hasn’t been officially confirmed on screen.
The biggest hurdle to a Cheers revival is that the key people who made the original show don’t want to bring it back. James Burrows, who directed the recent Frasier reboot, has said that Kelsey Grammer’s departure marked the end of Cheers. Despite strong fan interest in revisiting the iconic Boston bar, no one involved has ever seriously considered a continuation of the series.
A revival of the classic show Cheers doesn’t seem likely in the near future, and if it were to happen, it would need a fresh approach. Simply showing the original characters still hanging out at the bar, given their age, would feel depressing. A good alternative might be a guest appearance by the cast on the British version of the show, especially now that Alan has already made a connection there.
