Colin Jost, a long-time cast member on Saturday Night Live, is used to good-natured teasing from his fellow performers, including Michael Che. However, he usually doesn’t get jokes about his age. Though only forty-three, he’s relatively young, but compared to some of the newer cast members on the show, he feels like he’s from a different generation. This became clear recently when rising star Marcello Hernández had to explain some current slang and trends to him.
The Weekend Update segment had a simple idea: Bowen Yang, playing his character Hernández, acted as a translator for Gen Z slang, explaining what current terms mean for older viewers. However, it soon became an opportunity for Yang to playfully tease and joke about Colin Jost, who became the frequent target of the humor.
Hernández also discovered an old photo of Jost and joked about how much he’s changed, saying he’s gone from looking rough to surprisingly put-together. You can watch the funny clip here…
As someone who grew up as a Millennial, this feels like a personal jab. It seems like just yesterday we were setting the trends with our casual boasting and living in the moment, and now the younger generation is criticizing us, acting like they’re superior. It’s really upsetting, and I definitely don’t approve.
Luckily, Jost is a good sport and doesn’t mind being the target of jokes. His back-and-forth with Michael Che is well-known, but if you watch ‘Weekend Update’ regularly, you’ll see he’s playfully teased in other segments too. Che occasionally takes a joke himself, but Jost’s reactions to being ribbed are what really make it funny. He’s genuinely funny as the target of these jokes, and I mean that in a good way.
Saturday Night Live is back after its Christmas break and has aired two episodes in 2026. The first episode, featuring Finn Wolfhard, caused some unexpected controversy. Many fans of Stranger Things, particularly those from Gen Z, were upset by a sketch that playfully referenced the show’s coming out scene. This week’s episode, hosted by Teyana Taylor, has been much better received and hasn’t faced the same criticism.
I’m so excited for the new SNL episode next week! Alexander Skarsgard is hosting, and honestly, he’s amazing at everything he does. I have a feeling it’s going to be a really funny show – and knowing SNL, there’s a good chance they’ll poke fun at Colin Jost and the rest of the Millennial generation too!
