Xbox head Matt Booty recently explained Microsoft’s evolving strategy regarding exclusive games in an interview with Gamertag Radio.
If you didn’t hear, Microsoft announced that both Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will only be available on their consoles. It was reported that Gears of War: E-Day, releasing October 6th, was nearly finished for PlayStation 5 as well.
Asked directly about its approach moving forward, Booty said:
Look, as a gamer myself, I know how important it is to have consistency. So, our big multiplayer games – the ones that are always being updated – are going to stay on multiple platforms. If we’ve already told players a game is coming to certain systems, we absolutely plan to keep that promise. Going forward, we’re not going to rush any decisions about where games launch. When we announce a release date, we’ll also announce which platforms it’s coming to, so everyone knows where they can play. It’ll really just depend on the game, you know, case by case.
The phrase “case-by-case” might worry PlayStation 5 owners, as Sony used similar vague language when it acquired Bethesda and Activision earlier in the console generation.
Although not all Xbox games have been released on PlayStation, most of them have been over the last year and a half.
As a big PlayStation fan, I was surprised and excited to see announcements for games like State of Decay 3, Senua, and Spyro: A Realm Beyond coming to the PS5 at the Xbox Showcase today! It’s awesome that these titles will be available on PlayStation at the same time as Xbox.
It’s unclear whether the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day will be an exception, but Booty stated that their major multiplayer games will still be released on multiple platforms.
While the single-player experience is a key part of this third-person shooter series, the game also focuses on competitive online and cooperative play. The developers recently shared plans to continually update the game after release – essentially turning it into an ongoing live service.
I find it interesting that games like Senua and Spyro: A Realm Beyond, which seem designed for single players, are getting PS5 versions, but Clockwork Revolution isn’t. What’s even more surprising is that neither Senua nor Spyro were announced for any platform before today.
As a big fan, I’m getting the feeling Microsoft is still figuring out how they want to talk about their game plans. It seems like we might not even know which games are coming to PlayStation 5 until very close to their release – basically, no advance notice at all! I guess we’ll have to wait for a lot more interviews to get a clearer picture, but it’s a little frustrating not knowing what to expect.
In a lot of ways, folks, we’re going right back to square one here.
