Game of Thrones Actor Michael Patrick Dead at 35

A light has gone too soon.

Irish actor Michael Patrick, known for his roles in theater and television, has passed away at the age of 35 after a three-year struggle with Motor Neuron Disease. His wife, Naomi Sheehan, shared the news on social media.

Naomi shared on April 8th that Michael died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after a 10-day hospital stay. She expressed immense grief, saying she was utterly heartbroken.

Motor neuron disease (MND) is a group of conditions, including ALS, that cause the body’s motor neurons to break down too early. This leads to problems with essential functions like breathing, swallowing, speaking, and walking. Unfortunately, there is no known cure at this time.

Naomi continued her tribute, saying that Mick inspired everyone he met, not just during his recent illness, but throughout his entire life. He truly lived life to the fullest, radiating joy, positivity, and a contagious laugh. He was a remarkable, larger-than-life man, easily recognized by his red hair.

She expressed gratitude to everyone who had supported her and Michael since his diagnosis, and then shared a favorite quote of her husband’s, from Irish poet Brendan Behan.

She remembered being told that the keys to happiness are simple: food, drink, and someone to love. Her advice? Don’t complicate things – just eat, drink, and love.

Besides his work as a Shakespearean actor on stage, Michael also appeared in several television series, including Blue Lights, This Town, and Blasts from the Past. He also had a role in an episode of season six of Game of Thrones.

He co-created and starred in the BBC series My Left Nut, which grew from a one-man play he wrote about his experiences as a teenager when he feared he had testicular cancer.

It was incredibly moving to see how Mickey dealt with his diagnosis in 2023, much like he always did – through his art. He created a brand new one-man show called My Right Foot, and it was so powerful because it was directly linked to where he first noticed the weakness caused by MND. It felt deeply personal and honest, a way for him to process everything and share it with us.

Michael described his upcoming production in May 2025 as a follow-up to his show My Left Nut. He plans to perform it at the Lyric Belfast in October, jokingly adding that he hopes to still be alive by then!

Keeping it light, he warned, “That’s the type of joke you can expect if you come to see the play.”

Michael’s stage work included a 2024 adaptation of The Tragedy of Richard III, where he played the English king while using a wheelchair. He then received the Judges’ Award at The Stage Awards in January 2025 – a highly respected honor in British theatre.

After the show finished in November 2024, Michael called it a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

He shared on Instagram how grateful he was for all the love and support he’d received. He thanked everyone involved in creating the show, as well as those who came to see it, saying he was incredibly proud of what they accomplished together.

He shared the final speech he wrote for his character, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s thoughts on death. It was a particularly emotional ending for Michael to deliver.

As the monologue concludes, it reminds us that death is inevitable. We simply prolong life, delaying the inevitable, because death will come when it’s meant to come.
