Netflix has released its new historical series, Death by Lightning, and early reviews are incredibly positive. The miniseries, created by Mike Makowsky and executive produced by the team behind Game of Thrones – David Benioff and D. B. Weiss – tells the story of the events surrounding the assassination of President James A. Garfield, played by Michael Shannon.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the new film Death by Lightning currently has a very positive score of 88%. However, this is based on only 8 reviews, so the score is likely to change as more people share their opinions.
Most reviews agree that the Netflix series accurately portrays President Garfield’s time in office and the events leading up to his assassination by Charles J. Guiteau. Critics especially praise the performances of Matthew Macfadyen and Shannon, with many considering Macfadyen to be particularly brilliant. Several reviewers also noted how the show’s themes surprisingly resonate with current political issues.
Featuring Nick Offerman, Betty Gilpin, Bradley Whitford, and Shea Wingham alongside Shannon and Macfadyen, the Netflix series Death by Lightning has a fantastic cast. All four episodes were directed by Matt Ross and written by Makowsky.
