The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, brings back familiar and introduces new houses from the world of Westeros. This six-part show, the latest installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe, will likely excite fans with both recognizable and intriguing new families.
The story follows Duncan, a young knight hoping to find a place serving one of Westeros’s noble families. He arrives at a tournament a century before the events of Game of Thrones, where many houses have gathered to compete in jousting, enjoy festivities, and pursue their own ambitions.
House Targaryen
George R.R. Martin clearly favors House Targaryen, and they play a significant role throughout his book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While the scheming Targaryen prince returns, this story features a wider range of characters – some who will help, and others who will hinder.
Although the trailers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms haven’t shown the Targaryens yet, the first episode mentions them and hints they’ll be appearing soon.
House Baratheon
Ser Lyonel Baratheon, nicknamed the “Laughing Storm” and played by Daniel Ings, is currently the main representative of House Baratheon. Introduced in episode 1, he shares the hearty appetite for food and drink seen in Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) from Game of Thrones, but has a more uninhibited and energetic personality.
Lyonel was among the first of the great lords to greet Dunk, quickly resolving a small disagreement. He’s also known for wearing a crown made of stag horns, which symbolizes his family’s crest.
House Lannister
In the first episode, you can briefly spot the Lannister flags – a golden lion on a red background. While we haven’t met any members of House Lannister yet – who were major antagonists in Game of Thrones – they might not be central to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, though their presence is always felt.
House Ashford Of Ashford
Throughout A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, you’ll see the flags of House Ashford – a white sun and chevron on an orange background – because the story revolves around a tourney hosted by them. In the first episode, Plummer, the steward, quickly becomes fond of Dunk.
House Dondarrion
In Game of Thrones, House Dondarrion was known for its honorable leader, Beric (Richard Dormer). However, in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, they appear less virtuous. During a tourney, Dunk asks Manfred Dondarrion (Daniel Monks) to confirm his knighthood, but Manfred is uninterested, being more focused on socializing and enjoying himself.
House Fossoway
House Fossoway, a noble family from the Reach, appears in the first episode. Steffon Fossoway, the heir to Cider Hall, is shown attacking his cousin and assistant, Raymun, before challenging Dunk to a duel, which Dunk politely refuses.
Dunk then meets Raymun, who is struck by how big he is, but even more by his reluctance to fight, even though Dunk seems stronger than his cousin. The symbol of House Fossoway, who live at Cider Hall, is a red apple on a gold background.
House Hardyng
The latest trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms features a knight competing in a joust with a shield displaying the red and white diamond symbol of House Hardyng, a noble family from the Vale. While mentioned in the books, House Hardyng hasn’t appeared in either Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.
House Beesbury Of Honeyholt Or House Jast
A knight from House Hardyng is competing in a joust against an opponent wearing dark yellow and black armor. Based on the colors, he’s likely from either House Beesbury of Honeyholt or House Jast. Lord Lyman Beesbury, played by Bill Paterson, serves as King Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) Master of Coin and strongly objects to the scheme to overthrow Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) in the series House of the Dragon.
House Cafferen
House Cafferen appears only briefly in the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. During an interrogation, Lyonel Baratheon mentions that Lord Cafferen of Fawntown, despite being poor, offered him a gift. The symbol of House Cafferen is two white fawns on a green background.
