Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington Gives Passionate Response to Season 8 Remake Petition, 7 Years Later

Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, has addressed the petition calling for a remake of the show’s eighth season. Seven years after the controversial finale aired on HBO, the ending continues to draw criticism and is often cited as a prime example of how a popular series should not conclude. Many fans disliked key plot points, such as Daenerys Targaryen’s sudden shift in character and the unexpected choice of Bran Stark as king, leading to significant online backlash.

The final season of the show received so much negative feedback that fans started a petition on Change.org asking HBO to redo it with different writers. The petition quickly gained nearly two million signatures, but a remake never happened – and Kit Harington found the idea frustrating. In an interview with The New York Times while promoting Season 4 of Industry, Harington defended the show’s creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, pointing out all the effort they had put into the series.

I was really upset by that. It felt incredibly disrespectful, and honestly, I think it was a foolish thing to do – the kind of behavior you only see on social media.

It’s Good HBO Didn’t Remake Game of Thrones Season 8

It’s easy to see why Harington is upset. After dedicating ten years to the show and working alongside its creators, he understandably feels protective of it. He’s particularly frustrated by the suggestion that it should be remade simply because some viewers disliked the ending. While he doesn’t dismiss all criticism, he offers a unique perspective as someone deeply involved in the production. Harington has acknowledged that Season 8 of Game of Thrones wasn’t perfect, but he believes some missteps were almost inevitable.

Looking back, the biggest issue with the final season of Game of Thrones was probably fatigue. We were all incredibly tired, and simply couldn’t have kept going. I understand why some viewers felt the ending was rushed, and I’d agree with that assessment. But honestly, I’m not sure we could have done anything differently. Looking at photos from that time, I appear completely exhausted – I genuinely didn’t have the energy for another season.

Similar to the recent fan theory about a hidden final episode of Stranger Things, it was a good decision for HBO not to redo the final season of Game of Thrones. Remaking it would have been incredibly difficult – considering the cost, time, contracts, and other logistical issues. Plus, even with a redo, there’s no guarantee dissatisfied fans would have been happy with the new ending. Attempting a remake would also set a problematic precedent. It’s important to remember that failures and mistakes are natural parts of the creative process, and not every story needs a perfect conclusion.

The actor has definitively said he won’t return to the world of Game of Thrones. He considered reprising his role as Jon Snow in a potential spinoff, but the project was cancelled because they couldn’t develop a compelling storyline. He recently stated he’s “happy to be done with it” and has no plans to revisit the character. Despite this, HBO is still considering new Game of Thrones sequels, meaning the story could continue beyond the original eight seasons, even without Jon Snow’s involvement.

Game of Thrones is available to stream on HBO Max.
