The gritty first look for the Game of Thrones: The Mad King prequel has been revealed.
A new stage production, inspired by the world of Game of Thrones, will premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from July 20th to September 5th. The play takes place years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and the HBO series, focusing on a pivotal tourney at Harrenhal. This event marks the beginning of a rebellion against King Aerys II Targaryen, often called the Mad King. The production is written by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke.
I just saw the first look at the Game of Thrones: The Mad King play over on Martin’s website, Not a Blog, and it’s really striking! They released the official poster, which shows a shattered golden crown half-buried in the dirt. It’s a powerful image, and even better, tickets are finally on sale! You can check out the poster below – it definitely caught my eye.
For years, fans have wondered if a story about the events leading up to Game of Thrones – specifically the tournament at Harrenhal, Robert’s Rebellion, and the fall of the Mad King – would be told. Now, a stage play is the first to bring this history to life. The characters of Rhaegar Targaryen, Lyanna Stark, Robert Baratheon, and the Mad King are central to the entire Game of Thrones saga. While the HBO series hinted at these events through Bran Stark’s visions, it never fully showed them, leaving audiences eager for the complete story.
With strong interest in the prequel’s story and the enduring popularity of the Game of Thrones franchise, many are wondering if the play will extend its run beyond the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The success of long-running shows like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Stranger Things: The First Shadow suggests that Game of Thrones: The Mad King could also enjoy a long and successful run.
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms received fantastic reviews and drew an average of 36 million viewers per episode – even more than the 20 million average for season two of The Pitt. Currently, season two of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is being filmed, and season three of House of the Dragon will premiere on June 21st. This will be the first time that new seasons of two different Game of Thrones series have been released within the same year.
With so much continued interest in the world of Game of Thrones, a TV series based on The Mad King is a real possibility. Many fans wanted this story as a prequel even before House of the Dragon or A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms were announced, and the current stage play offers a good starting point for a television adaptation. While the play might run for a while or even tour, a TV series on HBO would reach a much wider audience. For now, however, The Mad King remains a stage production.
