HBO is considering moving beyond prequels and continuing the story of Game of Thrones more directly, six years after the original series ended. So far, their efforts have focused on stories set in the past. Their first attempt at a spinoff, Bloodmoon, was set almost 8,000 years before the events of Thrones, but was cancelled after a costly pilot. House of the Dragon takes place about 170 years earlier, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be set roughly 90 years before the War of the Five Kings.
We’ve heard about several potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, like those focusing on Aegon’s Conquest and 10,000 Ships, which seemed to follow a similar historical approach. However, George R.R. Martin recently surprised everyone by announcing that multiple sequels are actually in the works. He shared this news while speaking at the Iceland Noir Festival (as reported by Los Siete Reinos).
Besides Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, several other Game of Thrones spin-off shows are being created. Most of these new series are set in the past, as prequels. There are currently around five or six in development, and I’m collaborating with other writers and creators. We are also exploring some potential sequels.
What Could The Game of Thrones Sequels Be About?
Look, the idea of continuing the Game of Thrones story isn’t exactly new. A few years back, Kit Harington actually pitched a Jon Snow sequel, envisioning a show set after the controversial Season 8 finale. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out – the writers just couldn’t nail the story. But don’t count it out completely! HBO’s Casey Bloys has hinted they might revisit the idea sometime down the line, so a Jon Snow spin-off isn’t totally dead.
A logical next step for the world of Game of Thrones would be a series focused on Arya Stark. The show ended with her embarking on a journey to explore lands west of Westeros, and that adventure could make for a compelling TV show. Arya was a fan favorite, guaranteeing audience interest, and the premise offers a fresh story distinct from the original series. There’s even a hint that George R.R. Martin and Maisie Williams discussed a related project last year.
While it seems improbable, a ninth season of Game of Thrones isn’t entirely impossible. A continuation focusing on Bran’s rule, Sansa’s reign in the North, Jon Snow’s life beyond the Wall, and other unresolved storylines is conceivable, given the current focus on established franchises and capitalizing on fan favorites. Alternatively, a sequel could introduce a completely new cast of characters or jump far into the future, long after the original characters are gone.
Besides these projects, HBO is also developing several other potential shows. These include a series about Aegon the Conqueror and 10,000 Ships, which focuses on the warrior princess Nymeria. They’re also working on animated shows, one exploring the adventures of Corlys Velaryon before the events of House of the Dragon, and another set in the distant empire of Yi Ti. Stories like the Blackfyre Rebellions and Robert’s Rebellion, or even the fall of Valyria, are also possibilities. With so much history to draw from, creating Game of Thrones prequels seems much more manageable than continuing the story forward.
You can watch Game of Thrones on HBO Max. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming to HBO on January 18, 2026, and the third season of House of the Dragon will premiere that summer.
