The popular world of Game of Thrones is expanding with the announcement of a new game, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.
Game of Thrones, created by George R.R. Martin and based on his fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire, first aired on HBO on April 17, 2011. The series ran for eight seasons, ending on May 19, 2019, and has since been followed by House of the Dragon in 2022 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which began in 2026. Both of these follow-up series are currently ongoing.
I was really interested to hear Warner Bros.’ Shauna Spenley speak at the Variety Entertainment Marketing Summit this week about the future of Game of Thrones. She basically said that Game of Thrones feels like a property with endless possibilities, and that they’ve built a fanbase that’s in it for the long haul – they’re expecting more stories, and Warner Bros. is ready to deliver.
The announcement follows news of a planned movie, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, with Beau Willimon writing the script. The film will depict Aegon Targaryen’s military campaign to unite the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros – a key event in the history of the Game of Thrones world.
Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is the first movie spun off from the Game of Thrones series, demonstrating a commitment to building out the world beyond the original show. With House of the Dragon taking place long before the main series, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set nearly a century later with a noticeably different and often more lighthearted feel, the franchise clearly has many avenues to explore and expand its storytelling.
Development on Aegon’s Conquest began in 2023, and now that it’s officially progressing, Spenley explained that fans generally don’t want long waits between new releases. Other potential projects, like Ten Thousand Ships and Nine Voyages, are also being considered.
Originally starting as a series of books, Game of Thrones then became a hugely popular TV show, and now a movie has been released. The franchise as a whole – including books, the show, merchandise, and more – is worth billions of dollars. Author George R.R. Martin is estimated to have a personal net worth of around $120 million.
HBO’s newest series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, drew an average of 13 million viewers each episode, making it one of the network’s most popular shows during its run. Estimates suggest that House of the Dragon is even more successful than the second season of its predecessor.
The upcoming game, Aegon’s Conquest, set in the world of Game of Thrones, is expected to be released around 2027. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment in this expanding franchise.
