A popular Pokémon game originally released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 could be coming to Nintendo Switch this month as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. This game, a long-time favorite among Pokémon fans, hasn’t been available on any other console since its original release, so fans have been eagerly awaiting a way to play it again.
Last year, Nintendo said that Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness—both originally released for the GameCube—would be available on Switch through the Switch Online service. Since that announcement in April, we haven’t heard anything more from Nintendo. Many fans expected the games to be re-released by now, but there’s been no update. It’s possible Nintendo is holding them back for a future event or celebration.
Pokemon Day Soon
So, Pokémon Day is coming up on February 27th, and like every year, everyone’s buzzing about what Nintendo will announce. They haven’t officially said anything about a Pokémon Presents showcase yet, but honestly, I’m expecting one – they usually do it on Pokémon Day. This year feels extra special though, since it’s the first one after they announced those GameCube games are coming to Switch! I’m really hoping we’ll see Pokémon Colosseum make a comeback, and maybe even get a surprise release on Nintendo Switch Online – that’s how Nintendo loves to do things, dropping games out of nowhere!
If you’re not familiar with these Pokémon games, they’re side stories, not the main series. Pokémon Colosseum came out in 2003 and was only available on the GameCube. Interestingly, it wasn’t made by the usual Pokémon developers, Game Freak, but by a studio called Genius Sonority. This was Genius Sonority’s first game, and they continued to work on Pokémon games as recently as 2020 with the release of Pokémon Café ReMix.
When it was first released, Pokémon Colosseum received a score of 73 on Metacritic, which was a little lower than expected for a Pokémon game. Many fans believe the game was unfairly underrated, as it offered a unique and more grown-up experience. Despite this, it sold several million copies, enough to justify making a sequel. That sequel, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness (released in 2005), earned a 64 on Metacritic and sold a bit less. However, most players still feel its score and sales numbers don’t reflect the game’s quality. Overall, Pokémon Colosseum is generally considered the stronger and more beloved title of the two.
