The team at Pocketpair, creators of the hit game Palworld, has clarified its stance on the use of controversial AI technology. John Buckley, the company’s head of publishing and communications, recently explained their position.
In an interview with GamesRadar, he acknowledged that opinions are sharply divided on this issue, but believes most gamers aren’t eager to experience content created by artificial intelligence in their games.
According to Buckley, if gamers aren’t interested, there’s no point in discussing it further. He feels that their lack of interest is a clear indication it won’t succeed.
He stated that despite other companies using it, Pocketpair doesn’t currently use generative AI in the creation of their games.
While some companies, maybe even larger ones, are experimenting with generative AI to try and speed things up, I don’t see it becoming a major trend. Personally, I’m skeptical about its long-term viability – it doesn’t feel sustainable, and even platforms like Steam are starting to limit its use. It might be a temporary thing, but I’m not convinced it will last.
Steam now requires developers to state if they’ve used artificial intelligence tools when creating their games. As a result, we’re seeing many upcoming games that utilize AI in different ways and to varying degrees.
The game Crazy Taxi: World Tour recently faced backlash after a notice about its use of AI appeared on its Steam page. It turns out the developers are using AI to create initial reference images for the game’s art, which they then refine and finish by hand.
Buckley isn’t convinced generative AI is truly useful, even though it’s becoming more popular. He explains that their company has a strong team of artists who prefer creating things themselves, and he sees no benefit in replacing them with AI. He believes it would simply be unnecessary.
He also noted that Asian teams, as a general trend, appear more open to using technology in their work.
He suggests some markets are more open to change than others, and this difference is likely where conflict will arise. He predicts this tension will become more noticeable in two or three years, particularly in Western countries where resistance to these changes is expected to continue for some time.
