Fans of Jane Austen can now watch the first five episodes of “The Other Bennet Sister” on BBC iPlayer. The series explores the life of Mary Bennet, expanding on her story beyond what’s shown in “Pride & Prejudice.”
Unlike most period dramas, this series consists of ten short, half-hour episodes. Writer Sarah Quintrell explained to The TopMob Writers’ Room that this format helps create a lighter and more approachable feel.
Mary, played by Ella Bruccoleri (known from Call the Midwife), and Ruth Jones as Mrs. Bennet (Gavin & Stacey) have hinted that the show will take a more serious turn in the second half of the series.
When asked about the show’s overall feel, Bruccoleri explained to TopMob that things change noticeably in the second half. While still maintaining the show’s humor and charm, it becomes a bit more intense and deals with heavier themes, adding a darker edge to the story.
Jones also mentioned that what he particularly enjoyed about Sarah’s script and the final production, directed by Jen Sheridan, was its fast pace and engaging storytelling.
When you’re making a half-hour show, it needs to move quickly, but you also want to make sure you don’t sacrifice any of the important details or subtleties.

Bruccoleri admitted she was originally concerned about the show’s thirty-minute length, explaining that it would be challenging to fit a complete story into each episode.
I was initially doubtful, but I think it actually works. It’s strange, but even though the later episodes are still only half an hour long, they allow you to really connect with the characters’ emotions. The beginning episodes are faster-paced because they’re focused on setting everything up.

Jones emphasized the importance of using voiceover narration, explaining that it helps viewers connect with the story as if it’s being told directly from Mary’s point of view. He believes this perspective is crucial.
I recall a scene from the very beginning of the first episode—a quick montage that beautifully and efficiently explains the family’s background and relationships.
The story begins with Mr. and Mrs. Bennet having five daughters in a row. This quickly establishes the family situation for the audience in a fun and engaging way, and the humor throughout is excellent.
Bruccoleri noted the series is very funny, but also walks a delicate balance, ultimately feeling like a blend of tragedy and comedy to him.
You can now watch the first five episodes of The Other Bennet Sister on BBC iPlayer. The remaining five episodes will be added at 6am on Sunday, March 29th.
