In just a few short weeks, we’ll be on the brink of unveiling Borderlands 4, the newest addition to the series that propelled Gearbox Software into fame and success.
The show is also renowned for being a significant milestone in the professional journey of its leader, Randy Pitchford, who is famously known for wearing the most stylish attire at Gamescom events.
In the thick of Gamescom 2025’s bustling schedule, I seized an opportunity to catch up one-on-one with none other than the man synonymous with Borderlands – humbly shared by many others in his circle. We delved into this exciting new chapter for the series.
He has been part of the Borderlands team for more than two decades, gaining significant expertise along the way, as he happily adds.
On what Borderlands as a series means for him, Randy delineates with straightforward precision.
Borderlands represents a unique gaming genre that blurs the lines between role-playing games and shooters, offering an experience that is neither purely one nor the other. Similarly, it inhabits the space between comedy and drama, or reality and fantasy, creating a distinct and captivating blend of elements.
In his words, the characters inhabit a realm that straddles their true selves and the versions they aspire to be. This resonates with me deeply, as it seems to mirror my own experiences and, I believe, those of many others.
It seems to me that I prefer existing in a place where boundaries blend – places that are neither here nor there. I believe many others share this inclination as well, and I suspect this might be one reason behind the popularity of the game titled ‘Borderlands’.
In the opinion of many fans, Borderlands 4 marks a fresh start for the franchise. However, when I inquired about his feelings on the matter, Randy Pitchford (the creator of the series) expressed some mixed emotions about it.
He starts by saying that they came close to completing the trilogy, but are now embarking on a fresh series with Borderlands 4. However, if you’re familiar with the story and characters, you’ll find continuity that makes it feel familiar. Despite pushing boundaries and innovating significantly in Borderlands 4, it doesn’t stray too far from its roots, remaining essentially the same game.
If you’re a fan of Borderlands, you’re definitely going to adore Borderlands 4! For those who haven’t experienced a Borderlands game yet but are intrigued, this could be an ideal starting point for your adventure.
In the continuation of the series, it’s worth mentioning that Borderlands 3 has been the franchise’s biggest commercial success. However, more recent installments have faced a greater amount of criticism. Interestingly, Randy appears unfazed by these criticisms.
He clarifies that every game has faced criticism and people remember their experiences differently. You can examine the critical appraisals, and observe that various games receive varying ratings, with some ratings being higher or lower.

In my opinion, Borderlands 2 could very well be one of the best games ever created. Setting a remarkably high standard, it will likely prove challenging for other titles to surpass its greatness.
Borderlands 3 has achieved remarkable success across various metrics, including sales and player engagement. It seems that no matter which benchmark we use for comparison, this game truly shines.
In the course of discussing social media, I seize the moment to inquire about his personal use of it. As a highly recognized figure within our field, Randy’s experience with social media, particularly his former Twitter account, has led to some notable controversies on several occasions.
He chuckles, stating that he’s just as ordinary as everyone else. In his downtime, he admits to using his phone for browsing social media while seated on the toilet – after all, there aren’t many other activities to engage in.
I created a Twitter account right from its launch, and I continue to use it regularly. It’s quite fascinating because it serves as an engaging platform allowing interaction between myself and anyone else, which is something unique and unavailable elsewhere.
I don’t fear that situation. Initially, I thought I would be open and approachable, but there are repercussions. Sometimes, I help someone only for others to spin a story from it and generate more attention.
One particularly annoying situation is when someone intentionally misunderstands my stance on an issue, twisting it to make it seem like a completely different position.
At Gamescom, Randy shared an anecdote from his initial Gamescom experience, when he unveiled the original Borderlands, only to discover that its success seemed dubious in the eyes of some.
He reminisces that everyone anticipated its downfall. Yesterday, during his watch of the Opening Night Live with Geoff Keighley, there was a recurring guest who served as an analyst, and they discussed Borderlands prior to its launch, expressing without a doubt that it would crumble.
I believe he meant, “It seemed like Take-Two was planning for its project to flop or fail,” since they appeared extremely confident of its impending doom.
Funny enough, it might have been successful due to its unusual nature. You see, we’re artists and designers creating what we find interesting, and for some inexplicable reason, this particular piece resonates with people. Its success can be attributed not only to its unique qualities but also to the lack of similar work in the market.
Stepping out from my gaming realm for a moment, I can’t help but bring up an exciting topic: it’s been a year since the Borderlands movie hit screens! Now, if you know me, you know I can’t stop raving about it.
Instead of being protective over Borderlands and preventing others from contributing, I could adopt a more encouraging approach by saying, “Even though many people admire Borderlands and some are artists as well, eager to create new content, I don’t have to be a gatekeeper and deny them. Rather, if they bring forward innovative ideas and possess the talent to execute them effectively, having showcased their skills in various impressive projects, why not support their efforts? After all, what’s the worst that could happen?

I create video games, not movies. However, Eli Roth excels in filmmaking, while Lionsgate handles their distribution well. When it comes to stars like Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis – true legends – I’m open to the opportunity, so I’ll say ‘yes’ and let it unfold.
So what’s the worst-case scenario? It seems like we may have already experienced it. Some people enjoy it while others don’t, but it has been successful, especially when paired with our video games. If I’m just a business-oriented person, then I should allow more of this to happen.
I really enjoyed myself! To be clear, I’m not a filmmaker. If I were in charge of that production, it might not have turned out so well. In fact, I think it could have been terrible. Yet, I appreciate its existence and was fortunate to assist those folks, ensuring they had all the resources at their disposal.
“I had the privilege of strolling along the red carpet at the Chinese Theater alongside Jamie Lee Curtis. What an extraordinary experience! If ever you’re fortunate enough to create something significant, and Jamie Lee Curtis is set to portray a character, make sure to seize the opportunity!
I promise, Randy.
