Gears of War: E-Day gameplay and story details

The game is set 14 years before the events of the first game in the franchise, 2006’s Gears of War.

The new story will center on the early adventures of iconic characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, showing how they dealt with the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day – the day the terrifying Locust aliens rose from beneath the surface and attacked the planet Sera.

According to creative director Matt Searcy in a Microsoft interview, the goal of E-Day is to recapture the feeling of the series that fans love.

He explained that the new game will feel like a fresh entry in the Gears series, because it fundamentally is. The team is returning to the core elements that make Gears so enjoyable, while also utilizing the latest technology and improved methods to deliver a better gameplay experience than ever before.

“It’s going to be awesome, a game that feels both truly new and authentically Gears.”

In a recent post, studio art director Aryan Hanbeck admitted that Locust Drones in past games were often treated as easily defeated enemies. However, the studio intends to reimagine them for the new game, giving them a more significant role.

He explained they redesigned the drone to be frightening, physically imposing, and incredibly powerful.

The upcoming ‘E-Day’ story will reveal how both the Locust and the strong bond between Fenix and Santiago came to be, according to Searcy. He explained that players will witness the beginning of the legendary brotherhood between these characters, a key part of the ‘Gears’ universe.
