Gears of War: E-Day Studio Did Not Use Any Generative AI for its Development, Says Creative Director

So, I was reading an interview with the team behind the new Gears of War: E-Day – Matt Searcy, Nicole Fawcette, and Aryan Hanbeck – and they made it clear that they didn’t use any AI-generated art for the game. They actually really highlighted how awesome their concept art team is, and how much great work they did instead. It’s cool to hear they’re sticking with real artists!

I’m so excited for the art book! Searcy said their concept art team is amazing, and it sounds like the book is going to be incredible. As a fan, I can’t wait to see all the artwork!

The team also discussed creating a new prequel story within the Gears of War universe, ensuring it stays true to the established lore. They highlighted the showcase trailer’s scene featuring Tai, explaining that even the dialogue was taken directly from the Gears of War: Jacinto’s Remnant novel.

Searcy explained that they made a significant effort to stay true to the original story. The biggest change they made was moving a specific moment – the ‘Tai moment’ – to a new location within the storyline, but they ensured the moment itself remained unchanged. They essentially just shifted when and where it occurred. Furthermore, the dialogue used in the cinematic sequence was taken almost directly from the book.

According to Fawcette, the team called their practice of incorporating events from other Gears of War stories into the games “lift and shift.” Searcy then explained that the games only show a small part of the much larger story of Emergence Day and everything happening on the planet Sera.

As a huge Gears fan, it’s amazing to hear how much more there is to the world of Sera than what we’ve seen in the games! According to the developers, everything we have seen is just a small piece of a much larger puzzle. They’re really focusing on building out the lore with this new story, digging into places like Kalona and its role in the Pendulum War. They’re asking questions like why Kalona even matters, and why the COG are fighting so hard to save it. It’s exciting to think we’ll finally get some answers and a deeper understanding of the world!

These elements enhance all our stories by creating a richer, more connected world, which inspires us to explore new narratives. As we find answers, we also uncover new mysteries. And we’re excited to welcome back beloved characters alongside a fantastic cast of new faces.

The developers have been talking a lot about the story campaign for the new game, but honestly, we haven’t heard much about what the multiplayer will actually be like. Thankfully, Fawcette just said they’ll be sharing more details as we get closer to the October 6th release of Gears of War: E-Day on PC and Xbox Series X/S. I’m really hoping they show us some gameplay soon!

We’re finally sharing gameplay footage! Since this is the first time anyone is seeing the game, we wanted to make sure we provided some context first,” she said.
