We’re still excited about the recent Gears of War: E-Day Direct presentation, which followed the Xbox Games Showcase. This new Gears of War game, the first since 2019’s Gears 5, is a return to the series’ roots and promises stunning, cutting-edge graphics. Features like realistic destruction, dynamic lighting, and incredibly detailed character models are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, but understandably, it’s a very expensive game to create.
According to Tom Henderson, the game’s budget is surprisingly high, reportedly over $400 million. He described the budget as “insane” on the recent Insider Gaming podcast and questioned the decision to make it exclusive to Xbox, a decision apparently made just five or six weeks ago. This timing fits with the trailer that was briefly shown with a PlayStation 5 logo, and contradicts statements from the developers, The Coalition, who said a PS5 version was never planned.
Large budgets for major video games are common these days – the game Marathon is said to have cost almost $250 million to create. However, it’s important to remember that marketing costs are still being added, and the reported $400+ million likely doesn’t include ongoing support after release. The developers at The Coalition have announced plans for future content updates, but haven’t given specific details about what those will be, although more maps for the Versus mode are expected.
I’m so hyped! Gears of War: E-Day is coming out on October 6th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. They’ve got a ton of new stuff planned – you can check it all out here – but honestly, I think Xbox has its work cut out for it to make this one really take off.
