For its first few seasons, the show was widely considered a television masterpiece. However, it later moved beyond the source material from the author and the quality declined. The new series set in the same world risks repeating this pattern if its creators aren’t careful.
I’m so excited for the new Game of Thrones series coming to HBO and Max on January 18th! It’s going to be different from what we’ve seen before – less about huge battles and prophecies, and more about the personal journeys of the characters. It’s based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg books, and the first season will cover The Hedge Knight. They’re already working on Season 2, adapting The Sworn Sword, and it sounds like Season 3 will likely be based on The Mystery Knight. I’m really looking forward to a story focused on how people cope with challenges and their own inner struggles.
According to a recent interview with The National, George R.R. Martin has already provided outlines for future ‘Dunk and Egg’ stories that haven’t been released yet, according to the show’s creator and showrunner, Ira Parker.
He’s given me around ten to twelve ideas for future books and novellas, continuing the adventures of Dunk and Egg throughout their lives. We’re currently working on one of those ideas, and we’ll see how readers react. We’re actually developing two stories right now. I really enjoy writing in this world and telling this story, so I’m hoping we can make many more of these books if people like it.
Is an Endless Supply of Outlines for Dunk and Egg Stories a Good Thing?
Many fans of Game of Thrones noticed the show started to deviate from the books in its final seasons. This happened because George R.R. Martin, the author, was taking a long time to finish his next book, The Winds of Winter. It became clear the show would surpass the books before the book was completed. Martin did share a general outline of the story, but after the negative reaction to the show’s ending, he indicated his book series would diverge from the show’s plot, especially since some character storylines had already been altered to match the source material.
Martin has recently shared several outlines for future Dunk and Egg stories – potentially up to a dozen – which he’s said he plans to write after finishing The Winds of Winter (though fans aren’t expecting that anytime soon). While Martin is contributing ideas, this approach – having others develop stories based on his outlines – is similar to what happened with Game of Thrones, and puts the series in a vulnerable position.

Although A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could potentially last for many seasons, production speeds mean it might take over ten years to complete. House of the Dragon is currently projected to finish in 2028, taking six years for just four seasons. The planned scope of the Dunk and Egg stories—covering the characters’ entire lives—could account for aging, especially for Dexter Sol Ansell, who is eleven and plays Egg. However, slow production could become an issue as Ansell grows older. This all depends on the show’s success, as only two seasons have been officially confirmed so far.
