As a big fan of both George R.R. Martin and House of the Dragon, I was a little worried to hear about his comments regarding his working relationship with showrunner Ryan Condal. Thankfully, HBO boss Casey Bloys recently addressed it, and it sounds like they’re clarifying things. It’s good to know they’re responding to George’s concerns and setting the record straight.
Casey Bloys discusses George R.R. Martin’s comments about House of the Dragon and Ryan Condal
HBO Chairman Casey Bloys responded to George R.R. Martin’s statement about a strained relationship with ‘House of the Dragon’ co-creator Ryan Condal, jokingly comparing the situation to family disagreements that are usually kept private. Bloys confirmed Martin initially brought Condal to HBO and praised him as a strong showrunner and valuable collaborator.
Casey Bloys of HBO confirmed they have a continuing deal with George R.R. Martin, recognizing him as the creator of the world these stories are set in. Regarding Martin’s work on Season 3, Bloys said he was less involved than before, as he’s been prioritizing his book, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which he’s always considered a personal favorite project.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, George R.R. Martin explained that his collaboration with showrunner Ryan Condal became strained during the second season of the show. Martin said Condal essentially stopped considering his input, leading to a point where Martin felt the show had moved away from his vision. He recounted telling Condal in a Zoom meeting, “This isn’t my story anymore.” Afterward, HBO asked Martin to send his feedback through them rather than directly to Condal.
Initially, Martin brought on Condal and they worked together closely during the first season. Martin felt they were equals in the process. Condal hasn’t commented recently, but in the past praised Martin as a highly skilled writer and expressed a desire to rebuild their working relationship.
Even with some behind-the-scenes challenges, HBO’s head of programming, Casey Bloys, praised the show’s creative direction, saying he was very happy with Ryan’s work and their partnership. He also highlighted the positive reception, noting that House of the Dragon has an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after its first two seasons.
