Chyna McQueen, star of Get Millie Black, has shared that a second season of the show is currently under consideration.
This Channel 4 series centers on Millie-Jean Black, played by Tamara Lawrance, a British woman born in Jamaica. She leaves her career as a detective with Scotland Yard and returns to her original home of Kingston, Jamaica.
She meets up with her sister, Hibiscus (McQueen), and together they get caught up in a dangerous situation that could change everything for them.
When Deadline asked about a second season, McQueen said they hadn’t started working on it yet, but conversations were happening. He’s hopeful, and encourages fans to hope along with him.
Marlon James wrote “Get Millie Black,” which premiered last year to both critical acclaim and a warm response from viewers. Naomie Harris recently received a BAFTA TV Award nomination for her supporting role in the series.
The nomination makes McQueen the first Black transgender performer to be nominated for a TV BAFTA.
She was surprised by the news, explaining that she received a call from producer Simon Maxwell on the day nominations were announced. He told her she’d been nominated for a BAFTA, which she hadn’t anticipated. Her first question was simply, ‘Nominated for what?’
I’m still shocked by everything. It’s hard to believe so much could happen so quickly.
In an interview with TopMob before the show premiered last year, Millie star Lawrance expressed her desire for a second season, saying there were “many more stories to tell.”
She wondered what Millie’s emotional state would be like if the show continued for a second season. She questioned how Millie would cope and whether she’d deal with her personal issues, or if a new mystery would distract her from them.
The Hibiscus plotline feels very unresolved. We don’t know where she is or what became of her, and it’s unclear if she’ll ever be able to forgive Millie for leaving her again.
The story surrounding Lindo isn’t finished – with his escape, there are still many avenues to explore, particularly regarding the ring he’s connected to within the UK and the ongoing ties between Britain and its former colonies.
