As a passionate cinephile, I’m eagerly awaiting my turn to step into the spotlight, Guillermo del Toro! It seems that a fresh take on the timeless tale of Frankenstein is brewing, and it’s none other than the iconic Young Frankenstein that’s heading our way. According to Variety, 20th Television and FX are nearly finalizing a deal to bring Mel Brooks’ cherished film to life as a spinoff series. Although details about the plot are scarce at the moment, this upcoming series, titled Very Young Frankenstein, will be nestled in the world of the legendary 1974 comedy, often hailed as one of the greatest comedies ever made. In this new venture, Victor Frankenstein’s grandson Frederick (portrayed by Gene Wilder) finds himself inheriting his grandfather’s Transylvanian castle and continuing his life’s work: reanimating a lifeless body. It’s worth noting that Young Frankenstein has previously been adapted for other mediums, with a stage musical adaptation of the classic comedy gracing Broadway from 2007 to 2009.

As a supporter, I’m thrilled to share that at the age of 98, I, Brooks, will be executive producing alongside my partner Kevin Salter. Joining us is an incredibly talented creative team, all alumni from the successful FX series “What We Do in the Shadows.” This show, which recently concluded a six-season run, follows four vampires living on Staten Island and was inspired by a previous film version that made waves as an indie darling when it debuted in 2014.

Taika Waititi, visionary director of both the “Shadows” movie and series, as well as the director of blockbuster “Thor: Ragnarok,” will direct the pilot for our new project, “Very Young Frankenstein.” Stefani Robinson, writer and executive producer of the “Shadows” series, will serve as writer and showrunner for our new production. Lastly, Michael Gruskoff, one of the producers on the original “What We Do in the Shadows” film, completes our trio of creators.

Despite concerns about reviving old franchises after such a long hiatus, Mel Brooks appears to be one of the select few Hollywood heavyweights doing it effectively. Similar to the forthcoming Spaceballs sequel and collaborators Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez, Brooks has teamed up with younger creators to breathe new life into his cherished works while preserving their essence. The trio of Waititi, Robinson, and Gruskoff not only possess the ideal background for this modern reinterpretation of “Young Frankenstein”, they also boast unique, humorous voices that set them apart from Brooks’ traditional humor. Taika Waititi’s quirky, offbeat sense of humor resonates with contemporary audiences, offering a stark contrast to Brooks’ broad, neurotic style, ensuring that “Very Young Frankenstein” will feel innovative and invigorating.

Beyond this, the TV series spinoff titled “What We Do in the Shadows” might have appeared repetitive or outdated. However, gifted writers like Robinson, who contributed significantly to the show during her four-season tenure as a writer, managed to breathe new life into it by utilizing the original film’s essence and crafting something unique. The series skillfully introduced us to its fresh set of characters while deftly incorporating cameos and nods to the movie from which it originated.

It’s quite possible that a movie as unique as “Very Young Frankenstein” may be struck by lightning twice, given the talented trio of Waititi, Robinson, and Gruskoff in charge.
