Ghost of Yotei Follows in Tsushima’s Footsteps, Dominates Japanese Charts on PS5

The new game, Ghost of Yotei, is already proving to be very popular in Japan, with strong initial sales numbers reported.

The new PlayStation 5 exclusive game immediately topped the Japanese sales charts, selling over 120,000 copies in its first week, according to Famitsu and reported by Gematsu.

Just a reminder that these Japanese sales charts only track physical copies. We estimate that the actual total sales are at least double this number if you include digital purchases.

It’s really hard for a game to sell over 100,000 copies in Japan these days, unless it’s a major release from Nintendo, or a new installment in the Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter series.

It’s really remarkable that Yotei managed this, especially considering Sony often has a hard time succeeding in this area.

The next installment will likely build on the success of Ghost of Tsushima. The original game, following Jin Sakai’s journey, was a huge hit in Japan – it had the biggest launch of any PlayStation 4 exclusive and sold more than a million copies.

When it launched in 2020, *Ghost of Tsushima* sold almost twice as many copies as *Yotei*, with 222,000 units moved.

Several things played a role in Tsushima’s success. It came out at a time when people were spending more time at home during the pandemic, and digital game purchases weren’t as common five years ago as they are today.

For a striking comparison, the recently released Assassin’s Creed Shadows sold approximately 17,700 copies at retail on the PlayStation 5 in March.

While Ubisoft’s open-world game didn’t receive as much promotion as Yotei, the significant difference in sales numbers shows how popular Sucker Punch’s game is in Japan.
