Sony and AMD recently shared a video featuring key figures from both companies – Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind the PlayStation 5 and its upcoming Pro version, and Jack Huynh, a senior leader at AMD. They discussed how the two companies are working together to use machine learning to improve graphics and gameplay on PlayStation consoles.
So, in this video, Cerny and Huynh talked about three really cool tech advancements that I think are going to change gaming for the better. They’re saying these aren’t just for one console, but will actually help the whole industry move forward, which is awesome!
- Machine Learning and Neural Rendering – AMD and Sony Interactive Entertainment are co-developing new machine learning technology for FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to improve image quality and performance. Together, the companies created Neural Arrays, which allow GPU compute units to process larger portions of the screen at once, enabling faster and more capable rendering with better FSR, better ray regeneration, and new machine learning-powered features.
- Ray Tracing – The companies have introduced Radiance Cores, dedicated hardware that handles ray and path tracing in real time. This frees the CPU for geometry and simulation work while allowing the GPU to focus on shading and lighting, resulting in a cleaner, faster, and more efficient rendering pipeline.
- Universal Compression – A new Universal Compression system compresses all GPU data, not just textures, dramatically reducing bandwidth use and enabling more detail, higher frame rates, and greater efficiency with lower power consumption.
- Looking Forward – While these technologies currently only exist in simulation, they are planned for inclusion in “a future console in a few years’ time.”
