Ghost of Yōtei Has Sold More Copies Than Ghost of Tsushima in its Launch Period

Sony recently announced that Ghost of Yōtei is selling faster than Ghost of Tsushima did at its launch. According to CFO Lin Tao, the game’s strong performance is making a substantial contribution to the company’s current financial results.

As a big fan, I was so excited to hear that Ghost of Yōtei did incredibly well after its release in October! Apparently, it sold even better than their last big game in the same timeframe and really helped their financial results this quarter. Plus, it’s awesome that games like Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show continue to bring in steady revenue – it means they can keep supporting those games and making even more!

When Tao says “the same period of time,” he probably means the time when Sucker Punch Productions released its two open-world games.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella noted that Ghost of Yōtei sold about as well in its first week as Ghost of Tsushima did. He pointed out this is actually positive, considering the PS4, where Ghost of Tsushima launched, had significantly more players than the PS5 currently does. He added that anyone worried about the game’s sales numbers shouldn’t be, implying the numbers are perfectly reasonable given the circumstances.

Although Sony hasn’t shared current sales numbers, they previously announced that Ghost of Yōtei sold 3.3 million copies within just one month, back in November.

Since launching on October 2, 2025, Ghost of Yōtei has been regularly updated with new features and improvements. For example, a significant update in late November added convenient features like Auto-Loot, options for better graphics performance including a Balanced Graphics mode and variable refresh rate support, and a New Game+ mode for increased replayability.

The game Ghost of Yōtei is getting a big update this year, bringing back the popular co-op mode Legends. While the specifics aren’t available yet, Sucker Punch Productions has announced that players will face enormous, demonic versions of the Yōtei Six as new enemies.

Similar to the Ghost of Tsushima game, Ghost of Yōtei’s Legends mode will let you play story missions with one friend, or team up with up to three others for survival challenges. Players can select from four different character classes.

Jason Connell, the creative director for Ghost of Yōtei, revealed that Sucker Punch originally envisioned more elaborate flashback sequences for the game. He explained in a conversation with Vince Gilligan (creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) that they wanted players to be able to actively delve into the protagonist Atsu’s memories with a simple button press.

Connell explained that Atsu’s journey begins as a solitary one, but a single action—pressing a button—immediately connects her to her motivations and the emotional weight of her fight. He believes this is a powerful storytelling technique, as it allows the player to feel a character’s inner drive through a simple interaction.

The plan was ultimately canceled because it would have required the developers to create double the amount of artwork. As one person explained, it would have essentially made the game twice as long, impacting every aspect of development. While it was a fantastic idea, they had to abandon it because it wasn’t feasible.
