At their latest State of Play event focusing on Ghost of Yōtei, Sony revealed two exclusive PS5 consoles, limited editions. As one would anticipate, these special edition PS5s, along with their DualSense controllers, are themed around the game’s setting, Ghost of Yōtei. The exclusives showcase console designs adorned with artwork that represents Ezo, the backdrop of Ghost of Yōtei. Distinguishing these two limited editions is the color palette; one features gold artwork, while the other sports a black design. These new limited edition consoles and accessories will be accessible on October 2, in conjunction with the game’s release.
The style of art used to portray Ezo in this design is reminiscent of an ancient Japanese technique called kintsugi. This method involves crafting images from repaired broken pottery using gold and lacquer. As explained by Sony, the design embodies the spirit of kintsugi, representing beauty in flaws and reflecting Atsu’s personal tale of recovery and perseverance amidst the hardships she encounters throughout her journey.
On the opposite side of this console, there’s a distinctive emblem crafted by the manufacturer, adorned with the iconic symbols synonymous with the PlayStation.
In addition to being exclusive editions, they also include controllers that coordinate in color. Notably, the DualSense controllers exhibit thick, widespread brushstrokes across their front surface, and an outline of the main character, Atsu, is etched onto the touchpad.
Jason Connell, creative director at Ghost of Yōtei, shared that the inspiration for the special edition consoles stemmed directly from a key element in the game: an intense emphasis on exploration. This is reflected in several ways, such as the hand-drawn icons Atsu has marked on her map, a design inspired by kintsugi, which comes from her Ghost mask, and brushstrokes that resemble her Sumi-e paintings. The central feature of Mount Yōtei is also incorporated into the console design to tie everything together, while Atsu is prominently displayed on the DualSense controller. Each detail was carefully integrated into both the console and controller designs.
Both color versions of the limited editions can be obtained either as a standard PlayStation 5 or the Digital Edition. The console package will include a digital copy of Ghost of Yōtei, along with all the pre-order content for the game, plus some additional digital items such as an exclusive in-game mask and seven PlayStation Network avatars inspired by Atsu and the characters from the Yōtei Six.
For enthusiasts of the Ghost of Yōtei who already have a PlayStation 5, Sony has confirmed that exclusive Console Covers showcasing the artwork for both the standard PS5 model and the upcoming PS5 Pro will be available for purchase directly from PlayStation Direct. However, keep in mind that these items will only be sold in limited quantities. Additionally, you can also buy the unique DualSense controller separately.
