PlayStation Studios games are known for their large budgets – *The Last of Us Part 2* cost over $200 million to make, and *Horizon Forbidden West* had a $212 million budget. But their new game, *Ghost of Yōtei*, is an exception. According to Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming, its development costs were nearly the same as its previous game, *Ghost of Tsushima*.
Fleming noted that the development costs and time invested in the project were quite comparable to those of *Tsushima*, a game released in 2020 for the PlayStation 4 with a reported budget of $60 million.
It’s encouraging to see a reasonable price, especially as big-budget games keep getting more expensive. However, the price is a bit unexpected. *Ghost of Yōtei* offers a similar amount of gameplay and a map comparable in size to the previous game, but it was built specifically for the PS5 with potentially improved graphics and details. And that’s without even considering the effects of inflation.
As of September 2024, *Ghost of Tsushima* has sold over 13 million copies – a strong performance for a brand new game. It will be interesting to see if a potential sequel, with a similar budget, can reach that same level of sales, but even faster.
Ghost of Yōtei launches on October 2nd for PS5. Check out the latest cinematic trailer here.
The estimated budget for Ghost of Yotei appears to be similar to that of Ghost of Tsushima, which was around $60 million. This is significant because we’ve seen substantial budget increases for sequels to other successful PlayStation games, such as Spider-Man (from roughly $90 million to $300 million), Horizon (from about $60 million to $212 million), and The Last of Us (from around $20 million to $240 million).

According to Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming, when you consider the development time and resources – how long the team worked and how big it was – the project’s costs were surprisingly comparable to other projects.
