Movie fans recently got a surprise: a new G.I. Joe movie was in development, with screenwriter Max Landis initially hired to write the script. This came as a shock because Danny McBride, known for The Righteous Gemstones, was already working on a revival of the franchise, and Paramount was considering combining both scripts into a single film. Now, the story of this G.I. Joe reboot has taken another unexpected turn, and it’s getting increasingly complicated.
According to Variety, Paramount Pictures has decided not to move forward with a new G.I. Joe movie script written by Landis. The studio reportedly disagreed with Landis’ creative vision for the film. However, Paramount is still considering scripts from other writers, including McBride. Landis has shared that his version of the story would have depicted Cobra successfully conquering the world, leaving G.I. Joe as a forgotten myth.
What Does This Latest Twist Mean for the G.I. Joe Franchise?
The news that Landis was writing a G.I. Joe script just came out a few weeks ago, so this recent change is surprising and has fans questioning the direction of the G.I. Joe reboot. It’s currently unclear what Paramount intends to do with the franchise. According to Variety, McBride’s script is still being considered, assuming it’s delivered. There’s also talk that Paramount is evaluating scripts from other writers, and might even combine ideas from multiple scripts – which was the original plan when Landis’ script was first revealed.
It’s unusual for Hollywood to combine multiple concepts for a single franchise, so the studio is likely testing different scripts and ideas to find the right direction for a reboot. The G.I. Joe franchise definitely needs an update. While the toy brand is well-known, the movies haven’t been consistently successful. The Rise of Cobra (2009) led to Retaliation (2013), but the 2021 reboot, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, didn’t perform well. Considering this, and Paramount wanting to maximize its investment, exploring multiple movie ideas makes sense. It has now been confirmed that a script from Max Landis won’t be used.
