Gillian Anderson, known for her role in The X-Files, recently shared her enthusiasm for an upcoming reboot of the science fiction series, which is being created by Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker who won an Academy Award.
Last month, Hulu – which is part of Disney+ in the UK – announced plans for a new version of a famous TV series. The project will be led by the director known for “Sinners” and the Marvel “Black Panther” movies.
Danielle Deadwyler, known for her roles in ‘Rooster’ and ‘Till’, was the first actor signed on for the series. It centers around two FBI agents – both highly accomplished, but with very different approaches – who are tasked with reopening a forgotten division dedicated to investigating strange and unexplainable events.
It’s still unknown if Ryan Coogler’s new take on The X-Files will connect to the original show’s storyline or start completely fresh, but Gillian Anderson has given the project her full support.
At Awesome Con in Washington DC, she shared that she’d spoken with the writer-director about his plans for the show’s return and felt good about the direction he was taking.

Look, I just finished reading the pilot script, and honestly, this guy is incredibly talented and just… cool. It’s a really strong start, and I’m telling you, go in with an open mind. This isn’t like anything else you’ve seen, and it’s going to be fantastic. Seriously, give it a chance – it’s genuinely different and I think you’ll be blown away.
She anticipated the criticism – and even online harassment – that often comes with reviving popular shows or movies, and asked viewers to be understanding when it’s released.
“It’s special,” concluded Anderson, who didn’t disclose whether she would appear.
Gillian Anderson, known for her roles in Sex Education and The Crown, had previously announced she was done playing Dana Scully. In 2018, during interviews for season 11 of The X-Files, she famously declared, “That’s the end of that,” as reported by Consequence of Sound.

Getting Anderson to return as the character will likely require a compelling pitch from Coogler, but initial reactions and the excitement following the Oscars suggest it’s a real possibility.
We’re still unsure if The X-Files will get a full new season, so it’s best not to assume it will happen just yet.

Ryan Coogler shared that he wants to reboot The X-Files because his mother was a big fan of the original show. He had a similar reason for continuing the Rocky story with the Creed movies – his father loved the classic films starring Sylvester Stallone.
The X-Files is available to stream on Disney+. Sign-up to Disney+ from £5.99 a month.
