The creator of the popular anime Gintama is bringing their very first manga to life with a new anime series on Netflix. Netflix is already planning a strong lineup of anime for Spring 2026, but they’ve revealed even more content is coming, including this new adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi’s original work, which is set to premiere this April.
Hideaki Sorachi, the creator of Gintama, debuted in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2002 with a short story called Dandelion. While it wasn’t developed into a full series at the time, Netflix recently announced a new anime series based on this one-shot, premiering this April. Sorachi jokingly responded to the news, saying it seems Netflix isn’t concerned with preserving older works with care.
Gintama Creator Breaks Silence on Dandelion Anime

In a message to fans announcing the Dandelion anime, creator Sorachi admitted he usually avoids revisiting his first major work because he finds it embarrassing. He was surprised Netflix decided to adapt and expand upon it, jokingly suggesting they have no sense of delicacy! However, he sees this as a chance to reconnect with those characters after twenty years. This self-deprecating humor is typical of Sorachi, well-known to fans of Gintama.
Lots of information about the upcoming anime, Dandelion, has been released! The series will have seven episodes and will premiere worldwide on Netflix in April, though the exact date hasn’t been announced yet. This story is based on a one-shot manga, so it’s likely new to many fans, unless they read the very first volume of Gintama when it came out.
What to Know for Dandelion Anime

Daisuke Mataga will direct the upcoming anime, Dandelion, produced by NAZ. Yosuke Suzuki is writing the script, Ai Asari is designing the characters, and Yuki Hayashi is composing the music. The story centers around Tetsuo Tanba and Misaki Kurogane, who work for an organization called the “Japan Angel Federation Send Off Department” and help spirits with unfinished business find peace in the afterlife.
The anime adaptation of Dandelion is adding Chikahiro Kobayashi and Megumi Han to the cast as Tetsuo and Misaki. Meanwhile, Gintama is continuing its celebration of 25 years of manga and anime with exciting new projects, including recently released films. This resurgence of the beloved series is also prompting fans to revisit earlier works by its creator, Sorachi.
