Gladys Knight is shutting down what she’s heard through the grapevine.
Following accusations by Gladys Knight’s son Shanga Hankerson of mental and financial abuse against her husband William McDowell, Gladys Knight reassured her fans that she is coping well.
In his statement to People magazine on August 15, Knight clarified that there have been misunderstandings about his health and performances. He reassured his fans and concerned individuals that despite being in the entertainment industry for nearly a century, he’s remarkably well, which may come as a surprise to many.
Since the warm days of May, I’ve been on an incredible journey, gracing stages alongside music legends: Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, and Stephanie Mills! The upcoming schedule has me performing in 11 mesmerizing shows from September to December – a dream come true for this passionate fan turned temporary performer.
Over the past few months, I’ve been enjoying good health and happiness while spending time with loved ones. I can’t wait to rejoin my sisters on tour and perform with The Queens Tour. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
TopMob News has reached out to reps for Knight and McDowell for comment and has not yet heard back.
The knight’s comments emerged a few days after Hankerson, who was once married to the singer and shares him with her, informed The Shade Room that McDowell had been insisting on his mother continuing her tours despite concerns about her deteriorating cognitive health.
I prefer my mother not to be on tour traveling in a bus, feeling lost or uncertain,” Hankerson expressed during an interview published on August 13. “I don’t desire this for her. That’s my mom, and I deeply cherish her; I don’t want her to work another day as long as she lives. The path she’s choosing seems to be leading her towards her end, and I can’t bear the thought of witnessing that.

The 49-year-old alleges that McDowell deceives others into thinking that the Grammy winner is financially stable, but he pointed out that McDowell’s mother exhibits troubling conduct during her performances.
He mentioned that the band added an additional two to three measures, causing her to drift off. However, when the backup singers began performing, she snapped out of it. The team was forced to rewind the auto-cue screens as his mother kept forgetting to read from them.
Hankerson emphasized, “I’m extremely concerned about how she is being handled right now.”
