Glinda’s Powers, Recognizing the Tin Man & Wicked: For Good Ending Explained by the Director

The ending of Wicked: For Good is quite impactful for Glinda, though it leaves viewers with several unanswered questions. The latter half of the musical focuses heavily on Glinda’s journey – Ariana Grande essentially takes the lead role, even if awards recognition might not reflect that. Glinda is forced to confront the fate of her best friend, her own identity within Oz, how she’s changed as a person, and ultimately, whether she’s truly a good person. (Please be aware that this contains spoilers for Wicked: For Good.)

The third act of Wicked: For Good is a turning point for Glinda. She’s devastated when Dorothy appears to accidentally kill Elphaba with water – though the audience knows Elphaba survives and finds happiness with Fiyero. Glinda also gains access to the Grimmerie’s power, finally unlocking her own magical abilities. There’s a quick but meaningful moment where she encounters the Tin Man, who used to be Boq, and she clearly recognizes him in his new form.

Does Glinda Get Magical Powers At The End Of Wicked: For Good?

I have to admit, the movie doesn’t spell everything out for you, and I actually appreciate that! Director Jon M. Chu intentionally left some things open to interpretation. He explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly what was going on with Glinda and her powers. Basically, Elphaba giving Glinda the book was her way of saying, ‘You already know what you’re capable of, and you know the truth.’ But he made it clear we don’t get a definitive answer in this movie. It’s more of a challenge – what will Glinda do with her power? We’re left to imagine all the amazing possibilities, and I think that’s really cool.

A deleted scene from the musical Wicked suggests Glinda lacks magical ability simply because she’s never needed it, a point reinforced by flashbacks in the song “For Good.” Now, with Oz needing her help to move past the Wizard, Morrible, and Elphaba, and as Glinda learns what true goodness requires, it would be logical for her to develop powers – provided she uses them responsibly, as the creator notes.

Glinda embraces the possibility that she might not always succeed. The idea is that everyone has both good and bad qualities, and each day we decide which side of ourselves we’ll show.

Does Glinda Realize Boq Is Now The Tin Man?

Regarding the Tin Man, it appears Glinda understands his true identity. While Chu doesn’t explicitly confirm this, he agrees with the idea. In an interview with EW, he explained, “I don’t want to state it definitively… but yes, I believe she knows it’s Boq. She recognizes him, sees it in his eyes, and it makes her question how much the world has changed.”

Glinda experiences a harsh awakening in the two Wicked films, as her sheltered upbringing is put to the test. This highlights how people can change “for good,” but not always in a positive way. Seen through Boq’s eyes, it’s obvious that his love for Glinda vanished when his heart was lost; he now only feels intense hatred and a thirst for revenge.

While many expect the Wicked Witch to face punishment, the ending of Wicked: For Good shows Elphaba escaping and finding happiness with Fiyero, who has become the Scarecrow. They leave Oz and venture into the desert together, achieving a mostly joyful, though slightly sad, conclusion after everything they’ve been through. Director Stephen Chu shares that they considered much grimmer and more frightening versions of the desert scene, but ultimately chose the more hopeful ending that made it into the final cut.

Wicked: For Good is now in theaters.
