Hello Kitty, the beloved character representing Japanese ‘kawaii’ culture, is a huge global phenomenon. You can find her everywhere, and now she’s expanding into the world of American comic books with a highly acclaimed, award-winning writer!
IDW Publishing will launch Hello Kitty: Hello World! in July, coinciding with Comic-Con International in San Diego. This marks the first American comic book series starring Hello Kitty, who has previously appeared in Japanese comics and a long-running webcomic.
What is Hello Kitty: Hello World! about and who is the creative team?
Mariko Tamaki, a two-time Eisner Award-winning writer (recognized in 2020 for Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass and Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me, and again in 2024 for Roaming), is writing Hello Kitty: Hello World!. Cody Lemieux, known for their work on titles like Despite and Gnome Granny, will be providing the artwork.
IDW’s new comic series follows Hello Kitty and Friends as they travel the world, solving a mystery. Each issue will introduce new characters as the group encounters riddles in different locations. The artwork for the covers has been created by Min Ho Kim and Justine King.
The initial comic book series comes out in July, but IDW has announced even more are planned for 2027. They’re also hinting at crossovers between different characters, which is exciting given all the licensed properties IDW already publishes. Could we see Hello Kitty Meets Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Or maybe Hello Kitty Meets Sonic the Hedgehog? How about Hello Kitty Meets GODZILLA? Anything is possible!
What does IDW Publishing have to say about the new Hello Kitty series?
Bixie Mathieu, the editor for this project, announced that Hello Kitty and friends are officially coming to comics with IDW. She explained that these characters have brought joy to fans for decades thanks to their positive stories about friendship and happiness. Mathieu promises that both longtime fans and new readers will love these comics, which are being created by a team of talented artists and writers. She invites everyone to experience a truly heartwarming and unique reading experience.
IDW Publishing CEO Davidi Jonas expressed excitement about partnering with Sanrio to produce HELLO KITTY comics. He said they aim to create comics that capture the franchise’s cheerful and playful nature, offering enjoyable stories for readers of all ages, and bringing positivity to comic book stores.
Hello Kitty: Hello World! #1 is set to be released on July 22.
