A recent image from the upcoming God of War series on Prime Video sparked debate online, with some fans suspecting it was created using artificial intelligence. While casting news has been the main focus so far, this image has caused controversy even before any footage was released. However, it’s been proven the image isn’t fully AI-generated, though some digital editing may have been used. This situation also highlights how strong negative feelings towards AI can lead people to misinterpret standard image and video editing techniques.
The official God of War X account shared a picture of Kratos and Atreus from the upcoming series. The post announced, “Father and Son. Here’s your first look at Kratos and Atreus in the God of War series coming to @primevideo. Their journey to the highest peak begins.” But instead of celebrating the new show, many people online claimed the image was created using artificial intelligence.
Get a first glimpse of Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a new adventure in the God of War series, now being made for @primevideo. Their epic journey is about to begin!

Fans Accuse Prime Video of Using AI for God of War Teaser Image
A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) from the official God of War account featured a photo of Kratos observing Atreus practicing archery. The actors playing these characters are Ryan Hurst (known for Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos and Callum Vinson (Chucky) as Atreus. While fans initially reacted positively to the image, the conversation quickly shifted, with many people claiming the photo was created using artificial intelligence. Some commenters even mistakenly believed the picture was a direct screenshot from the show itself, unaware that a still photographer was present on set.

This is a genuine photograph taken during the filming of God of War. Details embedded in the image confirm it was captured by Leah Gallo on February 24th at 1:16 p.m. using a Canon EOS R5 camera and a 24-70mm lens set to 57.0mm. The photo is only four days old. However, some people mistakenly claimed it was created using artificial intelligence.
Hmmmm?

Honestly, when I saw that post claiming a movie was heavily AI-generated, a lot of people immediately called BS. They pointed out that the AI detector website itself isn’t super trustworthy. Some folks even dug up behind-the-scenes shots from other films, proving the site was falsely flagging things as AI when they were clearly real footage. It was pretty interesting to see the community debunk it.
Another user shared results from an AI detection website, suggesting about 19% of the image might have been created by artificial intelligence. It’s impossible to confirm this definitively, but many photographers now use AI tools within programs like Photoshop and Canva to refine their photos and fix imperfections. While there’s no evidence this photographer specifically used AI – standard editing could explain the image’s adjustments – some fans expressed their disapproval.
I’m a big fan of God of War and really looking forward to future installments. However, I think the recently released image could have been better – with all due respect, it doesn’t quite look its best.

The God of War series is heading to Prime Video, with filming beginning recently and expected to finish in April 2027, meaning a release is likely sometime in late 2027. Early reactions from fans to a single released image suggest the next year will be challenging for the franchise as it tries to satisfy audience expectations.
