Though Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again aims for a gritty, street-level feel, it’s now confirmed that a powerful cosmic entity from the Marvel Cinematic Universe made an appearance. After the strong fourth episode of Season 2, observant fans noticed what looked like The Watcher – voiced by Jeffrey Wright in What If…? – watching from the broken window of Fogwell’s Gym. Some viewers are skeptical, suggesting the two lights resembling his eyes were just a random occurrence, while others find it hard to believe The Watcher would appear in live-action, even though he previously appeared in a post-credits scene for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
There was a lot of discussion about whether the Watcher intentionally appeared in Daredevil: Born Again, but a recent Instagram post from Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum seems to confirm that it was. This makes Born Again the eighth Marvel Cinematic Universe project to feature the Watcher, following appearances in What If…?, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I Am Groot, X-Men ’97, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Eyes of Wakanda, and Marvel Zombies. Winderbaum shared the scene from Born Again with the caption “always watching…”

Why The Watcher Appearing in Daredevil: Born Again is Such a Big Deal

Although the Watcher seems to have god-like abilities, he doesn’t just watch anything. He’s shown us he focuses on moments where the multiverse splits into different realities, especially when big events happen. He usually appears when key characters interact at these crucial branching points. His arrival during Fogwell’s story suggests this is another important moment of divergence, but it’s unclear exactly what makes it so significant.
Vanessa Fisk’s current situation is uncertain. While Bullseye is usually fatal, the Marvel Cinematic Universe only confirms a character’s death when it’s shown on screen. The Watcher observing her after she collapsed hints that whether she lives or dies might be a crucial, unchangeable event in the multiverse. This makes sense, as we’ve seen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that Kingpin would react with extreme violence if Vanessa were killed. Vanessa is essential to Wilson Fisk – she quietly supports his power, tries to keep his behavior in check, and gives him a reason to continue. Without her, Kingpin could become completely unhinged, which is why The Watcher was there to witness what happens next.
