Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse is a huge success in North America, with the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters now streaming on Apple TV. This fall, fans can look forward to a sequel to the critically acclaimed Godzilla Minus One, titled Godzilla Minus Zero. And the world of Godzilla isn’t stopping there! Toho has announced that they’re expanding the kaiju universe, and even hinted at bringing back older versions of Godzilla in future films. The company’s “Chief Godzilla Officer” confirmed these exciting plans in a recent interview.
Toho, the company behind Godzilla, is planning its own shared universe of monster movies, similar to Legendary’s MonsterVerse. In a recent interview with News Picks in Japan, Chief Godzilla Officer Keiji Ota explained that this new initiative, called “Godzilla World,” will allow Toho to develop spin-offs based on original ideas, alongside films like those directed by Hideaki Anno and Takashi Yamazaki. While only Godzilla Minus One is currently confirmed, Toho has plenty of existing monsters and stories to build upon, particularly leveraging the universe established in Takashi Yamazaki’s recent film.
MonsterVerse Vs. Godzilla World

Godzilla first appeared in movies in the 1950s, and his popularity has grown ever since. This success eventually led to American versions of the monster, and Toho, the original creators, are happy to see these new interpretations. Recently, with the announcement of “Godzilla World,” a Toho representative expressed appreciation for the directors of the MonsterVerse films. They believe directors like Gareth Edwards and Michael Dougherty, who grew up loving Godzilla, truly understand the character and can be trusted to continue his story in Western cinema.
Fans of giant monsters have a lot to look forward to! Not only is Godzilla Minus Zero coming to theaters this November, but Legendary’s MonsterVerse will continue with a new Godzilla x Kong movie, Supernova, scheduled for release on March 26th of next year. While the plot is still under wraps, rumors suggest we might finally see Space Godzilla appear in a Western film. As the first season of the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters wraps up next month, viewers are hoping it will connect the events of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with the upcoming sequel. Beyond Godzilla Minus Zero, no other projects for the broader “Godzilla World” have been announced, but the franchise has a wealth of classic characters to draw upon for future installments.
